I am looking at painting my bumper cover. My local parts store quoted me about 25 for a pint. It is DuPont. How would the color match be? I plan on primer, single stage, and 2-3 coats of clear. The local body shop quoted 125 to paint it so I figured I would try the 25 first then if it's way off, then I would just get it painted by him..

Suggestions?

Paint code is TV; Midnight gray metallic

125 to paint a bumper??? That is a deal. Just save yourself the trouble and do that.

Yeah thats a good deal. I was quoted 400-500 for my tri coat

If I am correct you cannot use a clear coat over a single stage. Hence the name single stage, it has the clear coat mixed in with the color. I used it to paint my motorcycle. For $125 I would have them paint it and save yourself the hassel. If you want to paint it yourself use a base coat/clear coat. Also be sure to remove the bumper to paint it, this way you don't have to worry about overspray.

I'd probably pay the $125 to have it done. If you go that route the body shop can blend the new paint into the old paint on the fenders to make it match better if needed.

That's the price for it off the car and brought to them. Yea, I was thinking I wanted to get it painted quick and for the cheapest possible so it would be ready for my party. Just the paint alone for primer/paint/clear is 70-80 bucks.. And for the single stage having clear over it, I believe that you can clear anything.. Just puts more of a protective barrier over it.

You are correct, but the quality of the job will turn out looking like crap after some time. The top layer of the clear coat will flake off rather easy because you are not suppose to clear over a single stage. Single stage it many just a cheaper way to paint and cheaper means more problems. The clear will have a hard time adhering to the single stage. $125 is really cheap so I would ask how they are going to paint it single stage or base coat clear coat. If they 2 stage it than go with that. Remember this is a bumper that takes abuse so it needs to be durable.
