I am trying to replace my shifter on my 93 because my old one is oozing black crap and the new shifter will not go down all the way. It stops about 1/2 inch too high. The new shifter looks just like the old one, except the new one has a chrome button.
The new shifter is a tight fit on the shaft and feels like it bottoms out before it seats.
Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

The chrome button sounds like a Gen2 shifter, they are different from the Gen1 shifters.

It is a Gen 1 or T-Bird shifter, but it is smaller inside at the top. A 1/4 extension will slide all the way in my old one, but it stops about a 1/2 inch shorter on the new one. Weird :(

This is supposed to be a Gen 1 shifter. It was sold to me as such. I was just thinking that it might be for a Bird, since it appears to be different in fitting the shifter.

I put a black 95 shifter in my green 94. The 95 shifter has a chrome button.

I had to make the grooves for the "U" clip, that holds the shifter on, bigger in the metal shifter shaft, to get it to fit.

I don't know why they are different, but you can get it to work.

95 and 96's have chrome buttons, if it was a 97 or 98 handle it would be so obvious as they look nothing alike and the 97-98 shifter handles are half the length. i'm sure what you got is truely a mark VIII handle but like bill said, the 95-96 handles may need a little modifying to fit a 93-94 mark. i never tried to swap one so i couldnt tell you what needs to be done, but it sounds like bill answered that for you!
