Seriously - I need a walkthrough!!

Dude if you weren't in Waco, i'd be there - I might just drive up to Ft. Stewart, GA and have my brother in-law do it. He builds muscle cars and what not, and can tear this engine apart in like an hour LOL - then again, its an 800 mile drive.... I mean, Im sure I can handle this.

Will Junkyards just let you go and dissassemble :q:q:q:q? id think that would devalue their um...junk?

U-Pull-It yards deffinatly will, just ask at the counter for the location of the car you're looking for, most have price lists and stock the cars sections, however some don't even do inventory of the cars they have...and since it's a "U!!!"-pull-it..they kinda expect that YOU pull it..but instead of actually buying something, like the valve cover, tell em you wanted the cams but there's look bad
Private yards have illegal mexicans pulling those motors and stuff...guarantee you run in the back and yell La migrate! Every will take off runnin (it's hellarious) anywho, some guys will let ya do it yourself if you explain you may want other parts if you could look at the car and don't want things broken,
most don't care as long as you aren't back there smashing windshields (like I do)

why do you think i said good luck!!!! derek was gonna do the same thing to his that you are trying, and i had to put another motor in his car, then we found out the motor was junk, so i had to take it back out and put his original motor back in, after i refurbed a head i had and replaced the driverside head on his original motor. if you already have doubts, just stop, you'll break stuff before you manage to get it off.

+1 i have created my own hell bighting off more than i can chew right now!!!!!

if you have a day off, go to a salvage yard, take a car apart for practice, just take shyt apart, look how it's made and fits together...it's all a puzzle only 3D and not the flat ones with the pictures of baby seals that you like so much.

That's not a bad idea. But good luck trying to find a junk yard that will let you do that. At least, where I live, they won't even let you walk around the yards. They used to, but not anymore. You tell them what you want and they get it. Even the old "u-pull-it" yards in my area have changed to this practice. Maybe too many idiots that didn't know what they were doing got hurt and sued? I don't know. last year, I went to the local (what used to be) U-Pull-It to get an A/C compressor for my '94 Explorer. I was expecting to be able to walk out there and take one off myself and buy it. But no, I had to wait in the office while somebody else went and got the compressor. I couldn't even go out on the yard and browse. Personally, I like to go get my own stuff. But they won't let me do it anymore. And it sucks.

my 9yo daughter just helped me fix a buddys 03 Pontiac bonnevile, she put the alternator on herself

That is awesome! My 5 y/o son helped me change my transmission fluid last time. He loves to be under the hood. Any time I'm working on the car, he's out there with me. Mostly he hands me the tools. If I tell him I need a ratchet or a phillips head, he knows exactly what I need. He's gonna make a fine little mechanic some day.:)

Nothing short of a phone call can get him the answers he needs about the operations of certain salage yards, I grew up in salvage yards, my dad has owned and operated yards so I used to just go and take cars apart after school and during the summer...used to get loads of change out if seats and consoles..lol

me being a mechanic makes it alot easier to get in the back, only one or 2 places have not let me go into the yard, but this is also Texas, most of them are pretty laid back as long as, like I said, you aren't back there smashing glass and acting like an idiot and getting hurt.

It used to be that way here (central NC) until a couple of years ago. I could go to any salvage yard within a 4 couty radius and walk in and get anything I needed. Now, most places I deal with won't even let you go past the front door. And in the unlikely event they do, someone from the office will have to go with you. And even then, you're only allowed to look. You still can't get your own parts. I'm assuming insurance is the reason. It's just irritating to me since I'm used to going in and getting whatever I need for myself. Now I can't do that anymore.
