just some helpful info IMO.
i didnt know where to post this, so i figured this was the best place.
also, thanks billcu for information.
i used 1/2" custom chrome-18' i bough it at advanced auto parts, the code for it is S37750. i bought is because it uses 3M tape. I like the stuff, but i would prefer something that has a plastic covering on the front to protect the chrome when its in the box and when you are handling it. but its a good product non the less.
Well this is how I replaced the chrome strips on the doors. And on the rear of the car. The original parts aren’t offered from ford, at least that’s what the parts department told me. Any ways, here is how I did it. Im not saying this is the way ford did it, but how I did it.
First get your self something thin like a puddy knife to pull up the old chrome strip. i recommend using blue painters tape or something to keep you from scratching your paint. Start at the bottom or top and work it free from the adhesive. Its best to start at either of the ends.
Then, simply pull off the old chrome. KEEP THE OLD CHROME. You need it to measure your new piece of chrome. when cutting old chrome always cut it a inch longer then you need it. its better to have a little extra then to wind up with a short piece and have to cut another one. (thats was she said
)
Then starts the fun, start pealing off all the old adhesive. I used the puddy knife to gently push the adhesive to a small strip of it. Just made it easier for me.
then I used my thumb to get the rest off. You could used a plastic flat head screw driver. BUT BE CAREFUL.
you need to remove 100% of it. Otherwise it might not adhere right, or wont last as long.
then after its all gone, use Isopropyl alcohol. This will get off what ever adhesive is still there that you cant see, and all the residue that was left.
then starting at one end, start putting on your new chrome. I started at the back and worked my way forward. Make sure you pull the chrome tight so it doesn’t look rippled when you look down the car.
^ in this photo the chrome is strait, its just the reflection of the bush in the back round covering more of the sidewalk. Its strait.
Here’s before (well this is on my other Mk)
Here’s after.
Feel free to ask question!
