removing wiper cowl

hey i got the four phillipes screws out, but im having trouble getting it off the actual wiper itself... any pointers?:)
 
What? You want to remove the wiper arms?

Been a long time since i did this.... memory foggy

I think you raise the arm and then pull back a retainer at the base which releases arm from spindle.

Go look. Should be obvious.
 
no i just want to remove the plastic cowl to replace it. Theres one at the junkyard im trying to remove I got the four phillips out of it but then it started to down pour so i called it a day. So the wipers have to be in the up position?
 
i also want to remove my trans and thats neccessary to get at the bolts as well. I don't want to break any of that plastic stuff or the wiper arm by bending it the wrong way.
 
Well, kinda - i think you have to pull blade away from glass to pull the 'quick release at the base.

I did mine with wipers parked half way up the screen, so the hood wouldn't get in the way.
 
Ok. The whippers are tricky, but once you get it right once you get it every time.

Two things. As blue mentioned there is a catch thing that slides to the unlock position, its on the underside right were it attaches. There is a small tab that us visible that comes around the edge.

As that is pulled outward you pull up. Thats all. But the catch is you have to pull nice and even and not on the arm, just where it attaches. If you pull up on the arm it creates a wedge between the the two and you will never get it off. The first time I got this right I was like "that was way to easy". Too often people tug up on the arm and never get it pulled off.
 
Ya, what he said ^^ Will be self explanatory when you do it. I think i remember... when that quick release is pulled the arm locks in an up position - when you put back on you simply push it on spindle, lift arm slightly to release pressure off quick release and push the release back in to lock it down.

Oh ya, thats right Blue. Lift arm, pull release tab and lower arm to "bite" tab from re-locking. Then pull on not on the arm, but just above the connecting point.
 
ok well im searching for threads related to properly read the auto trans dipstick... im checking it while running and the dipstick has a cold and hot side. I was always told to check it while its warmed up and running. i pulled it and it was burnt red and pretty thin but it was still up on the hot side. any ideas on that one? I was gonna post about it but i guess i should just search some more so i dont offend you! :-)
 
Whats the question? How to check level? Its in the owners manual.

Basically, at operating temp (150 - 170 deg F) fluid should be within the hatched area of stick.

Just read your other thread, if fluid is at correct level and you have lost gears the tranny is likely toast! Get a post 98 trans off craigs list or somewhere - not worth wasting time and money on!
 
i agree, and i am on the hunt. however I was talking to a Cottman tech online and he was arguing with me that the mechanical diode isn't exactly better than the 1 way clutch, something about the mechanical diodes exploding???

I just checked the fluid in my other post, i have no idea how hot my car is but the water temp is after normal on the L (160 t stat). The fluid is hitting it, bu the fluid is very thin. Why is there a hot and cold on the dipstick? and what would the symptoms be if i was low or had dirty fluid? Would it actually slip in gears?
 
Not sure why it has hot and cold on dipstick - maybe for convenience so you can check it at any time? According to my service manual, it is preferable to check it hot.

Also from manual:

''If the transmission is not working properly - for instance, the transmission slips or shifts slowly - the fluid level should be checked''

I doubt the fluid being dirty would cause you to lose 2, 3 and OD in a week - sounds to me like something bad has happened. Fluid gets dirty from being contaminated by transmission clutches etc. Therefore, i reckon the dirty fluid is a symptom of the bigger problem, not the cause! (in this case)

As for the OWC thing - no idea, but i haven't heard anything bad about post 98 trannies.
 
Add fluid through dip stick tube.

Do not over fill!!!
 
well, i checked it with the car off but its still pretty hot out... it still goes up to the hot with the fluid.... so im guessing its not worth adding it. The only gear i have now is first! :-( so ill get that wiper cowl off and unbolt that trans riggghttt the hell outta here!
 
you dont check trans fluid with the car off, thats not how you check transmission fluid, the temp outside isnt how you check the trans fluid, you have to check the fluid with the ENGINE HOT and RUNNING.
 
i just did it for the hell of it... i did it today before with the car hot and running. The fluid appears so thin that when you pull the dipstick back out it just kinda falls off the stick.

Part of me wants to add a quart because as it sits now its already screwed...
 
I really cant beleive he asked "where do you add the fluid"...holy crap.


And..IF you believe a "cottman transmission tech" over Jerry W.. then you really REALLY are driving the wrong car sir.
 
what does Jerry W have to do with mechanical diodes vs the one way clutch... he just the downside to mechanical diodes, that they explode rather than burn out like the clutch will.
