Well my mech. buddy stoped by to take the wheel off cuase i couldn't find a kit that would work.
Well he brought his master kit and attempted to take it off. Well no...... 1 of the Holes stripped out. tried the next biggest bolt, stripped out again, 1 size bigger bolt, yup stripped it.
Then he took out these what appeared to be universal rods that flared out a bit at the end to grab any part of the wheel. They BROKE!! Well sort of there fualt. We took them to the bench grinder and shaved alittle bit of the area off cuase they kept slipping of the wheel when we were wrenching it.

Didn't even budge.

The center torx is out and the wire are disconnected...WTF????

And all this for the windshield washer button.

Put the bolt back in and thread is a few times, enough that it wont pop out and will have a god grip in the inner threads.

Now go monkey on the wheel. 8 and two o'clock and 10 and 4. Never pull on just the top or bottom, always hands directly across.

Thats how I do it, never ever have used a puller.

I did this yesterday,

loosen but not remove the center bolt.

Pull like hell with steady pressure

have a friend lightyl whack the center bolt with a small light hammer.

4-5 little whacks and the wheel popped off, only held loosely by the center nut.

a "little whack" is a technical term, meaning about as hard as you would whack your finger..

and yes, I'm probably alittle whack too.

we used the center nut for the puller and wacked it w/ the hammer w/ my 240lbs self pulling....got nothing. I might just take the chrome button out of the used one and find a way to put it in the one in the car.

Or i tap it some more.

Ok, im lost. Why do you need to remove the steering wheel to change the screen wash button? Why can't you just remove the multi function stalk and go from there?

Shhhhhhhh.... he is working so hard on this, dont tell him that now.

Actually if its a Gen II I think the wheel has to come off, the design is different or something like that.

Yeah, i just checked his prof - it a 97. Maybe it does need to come off then? dunno... out of my comfort zone! Lol.

Ah.. ok... cool. I have learned something new!

i've pulled probably 600 some odd mark VIII wheels 1st and 2nd gen and never used a puller either. just like said, keep the center bolt threaded in 4 or 5 turns and put your feet on the floor, sit in the seat and pull, wiggling back and forth lightly, not so hard you break the column or bent the wheel, 2nd gens are tougher to pull off then 1st gens so dont give up, it will come off, just make sure you keep the center bolt in there or you'll be eating your steering wheel, then you'll be eating through a straw!!
