Possible Charging Problem, IDK for sure yet

Good luck with this one Terry, odds are you will be doing this again.

Yeah Kirk, I'm sure I will but hopefully I'll get 3 or more years out of this new battery and alternator. Hard to complain about free though. I know it can crap out on me at any time but that's the case with any alternator really. Maybe not as often.

I'm very happy you found out what it was!! Burnt cars suck!!

Yes they do Rich. I never wanna be in another one that blows up. :) That really sucks!!

Well response to the hijack I made yesterday.
Also Nolimit glad to hear you got it fixed..

Now I had a dead battery after 3 hours of it sitting again today..
I read somewhere about some simple troubleshooting process's.
I I used a volt meter and then disconnected the 2 wire connector (not the positive cable) and checked voltage across the battery. there is no drop in voltage, pluged in the wires on the alt and it started dropping quick.. so the rectifier is bad..
Good News I bought a spare alt from a member a few years back and tried it and there is no voltage loss.. so problem fixed. - ummm no. now the alt I had would charge when running but discharge the battery when key is off. now I take battery to get tested at autozone (free check) and my 1000CCA battery is diagnosed as bad.. im hoping that's due to a poorly charged battery so here I am charging the battery for several hours now and will leave all night till I am ready to leave for work in the morning.. but seemd to be a straight forward test for this draw on the battery.

If you can trade that battery in for a new one for free, do it. A battery over two years old really don't stand up very many cycles like that. You'll probably always have a problem with that particular battery. It's likely it will be going down a lot during the winter months. I know you don't want that. Use that warranty if you have it. I wished mine would have been 6 months newer or else it would have been free.

yea no luck...

no warranty went today to check they already swapped it 3 years ago and it only had a 5 year warranty..,
Kicker is its only 3 years old (11/10) and well they only honor the original purchase date.. which was 2/05 so first one lasted 6 years and I got the replacement 3 years ago...

gonna have to see if leaving on charger all night now with a good alt will keep it going for a while.
the bridge rectifier in the old alt cause a steady drain on the system.. now its not there I hope it keeps a charge for longer then 24 hours so I can start it the next day

You should be fine and staring it out on the other alternator with a good full charge is a good thing. Less work for it to do. The only problem I see you having is during a 2 day sitting time during the cold weather, if you let it sit that long. May not be any problem during that either. Hopefully not.

Glad you got it fixed up Terry. Also another quick test on a suspected bad alternator causing a draw is to stick a screwdriver or metal object in front of the alternator pulley. If it's magnetized and sucks it to it the alternator, it's bad.

battery on charger all night long slow start this morning, got to work and it just wanted to die. the battery is toast.. does anyone have a used battery local to me I can get from you? Thanks
Bill

That's some bs right there
They should renew the warranty from when you get the new battery that's what even Walmart does.

Mine was the same way. It was free replacement for 3 years and pro-rated for the next 4 and I was 6 months over. The battery was $139.99 and I was only allowed $59.99 lol. The guy told me that it goes back to the purchase date. Sucked but had to be done.

that right there is why I cant buy a new one.. i cant afford it right now.. I have a friend who has a 12 year old battery. that was sitting in his moms car purchased in 04 but never used (so its old but new) it was stone dead, i charged it up for a test and it held a charge. Its also a top post so Im going to use that battery temporarily.. I hope to get that tonight and will find out.
