PIC request. floor cut open for fuel pump access

Search bot!!!

And nobody told me that pointing the bottle valve at the back of my head was a bad idea either, nor that putting the bottle under the hatchback window on a BLACK CAR in Texas wasn't the best idea either.

HOW in the hell we survived those days.. I dont know.

That little 302 didn't survive the bottle, god rest it's pistons...LMAO
OMFG
The headless drag racer.
You would haunt the strip forever.

I can see his point, I mean whats the big deal of cutting a stupid hole?
If I had a hole I would pull my pump to see if the float got screwed up.
I can only fit 13 gal. of gas into my 18 gal tank.
But I won't drop the tank to just look, because I should never run the tank that low anyhow... no big deal in my book.

Do it take pics, and tell everyone to f@ck off.

HOW DID WE GET TO BE THIS OLD!!!????!!!!

We should be dead so many times over at cat would be jealous.

I will have to say that after being in Kennindale, watching some guys warm a bottle with a propane torch was none the less eventful.

I really actually thing we could write a book on some of the things we should have died over IE: 410 sawed off with slugs and 20lbs propane bottles

Dr. SVO phd

Or careening thru a cow pasture FULL OF TREES at 50+ MPH in that LTD when it was so foggy you couldn't see past the front of the car..which was full of about 9 people.

If all I gotta do is pull out the back seat, open a flap, and replace the pump,

while the car fills with gas fumes, which will be hard to remove the smell due to all the plastics, then you have to hope and PRAY you dont have a static discharge while you've got your head stuck down this hole that's puking gas fumes in your face.

Sounds like a wonderful way to spend the afternoon, and the BUZZ Is FREE!

yea... it DOES also sound like the perfect way to BLOW YOUR ASS UP.

But.... dont let my previous experience with blowing myself up..slow you down.

If I had a dime for everytime I would have WISHED we'd pulled the gas tank out of the car, BEFORE attempting to cut the car up... I'd be rich.... huh Jeff.

come on tommy i think thats a little extreme!!! the car wont smell at all if the windows remain down. i just cut the floor open in my 94 to get the pump out of it to keep it and i cut right through the steel lines with a sawzall, i know not smart, but i wasnt scared, the guys at my shop were, they ran away, but not me, kept cutting, sure i know i could have exploded, but the 2 gens are not the same, you wont get near the fuel lines, and static discharge, :q:q:q:q all the marks i have parted and the stupid things i have done in 11 years and never once blew up or had a fire, not even cutting them up with torches.

yea no one ever though a simple injector swap would destroy a guys car..either.

granted you are the GOD of working on mark 8's.. this would be childs play for you.

but enter "abraham lincoln" with his obvious comprehension skills, who would read this and think it was a GREAT IDEA!!!!

then proceed to sawzall a hole in his gas tank and burn his moms house down

Immmmmm jus sayinnnnn

remember jamie, we're all to stupid to change the blend door without wasting half a day....dont give us too much credit, we'll get ourselves into trouble

We can't outlaw stupid.

But I will still replace my own injectors, without thinking twice.
Whatever that means I don't know.

I guess a hole to pull your pump is only for the guys who won't pump gas with a cig in their mouth.

all i am saying, is if the guy wants to cut a hole in his floor to get his pump out let, who the :q:q:q:q are we to tell him what to do, if someone wants to kill another person and is totally set on doing it, if you say dont do it you'll get caught, that person is still killing someone, let the guy do what he wants its his car. cut the :q:q:q:qer man, its yours!!!!

Did this on my SHO in with an air hammer. I didnt have to worry about fuel lines or sparks really because the hammer will just push the line out of the way. The car was packed to the hill because I was on my way from Orlando to NC. I did it in the driveway, with a slam full fuel tank. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. This was in FL in July... no fumes...

I love how half the stoners in the US suddonly become experts on everything the second someone else has an idea and questions it...
I for one will be doing the gas tank trap door on my 93, my last pump failed on me after driving 3 miles from the gas station and I had a FULL tank, I had to do it by myself, in the rain, with a scissor Jack in a bad neighborhood
it's not a hard concept for someone with half a brain, wait till the tank is near empty, drop your mufflers, loosen the hoses, remove brace, lossen straps and allow tank to drop a few inches, use a grinder and drill, tape the bit for depth, grind the panel open
several models of Nissans use these trap doors but I recommend doing a custom for the mark as the panel directly above the pump is not flat.. You can make the door gasket out of any piece of rubber, even an old bicycle inner tube would probably do the trick,
wouldn't worry about fumes in the cabin, there's already a gasket between the pump and tank

Access Door Dimensions

Hi,

Hi everyone.

This is my very first post on LVC. !!! Whoopie !!

I am "reviving" a (sat-outside-in-a-field-for-six-years) Nordic Blue '93 MK VIII.

These revised dimensions (below) are really VERY good, well honed, for my slammed Gen 1. You can count on them being accurate. Have NO idea about applying this dimension to a Gen 2, experienced Members please comment.

And, for a URL to get into my Photobucket shots, use this :

Note: photos in Photobucket album are of my first attempt, "revised" diagram is a bigger better access door.

Used a Dremel tool, cut off disc, and was VERY careful not to go deep in the two circled areas, due to lines below. The cut out piece is oddly shaped, and it becomes the hatch, and just add tabs to it around the periphery. I also added a new connector, (for the fuel pump's four wire leads), that I could access without getting under the car.

Hope this helps some owners.

Cheers,

Jeff

P.S. If there is anyone else around the KC, MO area that can help with DIY advice for inexpensive / effective MK VIII restoration ideas, let me hear from you please. I am a newbie, and appreciate learning from experienced people in MK VIII-land.

One resto thing I did was taking the black dash and door trim which had scratches in the rubber coating and soak them in the bath tub with hot water. Then I took a putty knife and peeled off the rubber coating and painted it all. Prep is bitch but it looks better than rubber missing on the trim.
