been a while since i posted, having overheating issues, just put a radiator in the car and its not plugged up or anything does anyone know a good way to burp all the air or anything? sitting at idle its fine for hours but as soon as i get rolling i can go around the block about 2 times and it overheats. thermostat is new and cant be an issue checked it before i put it in. help help help

...famous last words. LOL I've heard that one before! Seriously, are you sure it's a thermostat with a WIDE orifice? It doesn't matter if the auto parts store told you it was the right one. If it is the right thermostat then we will move on but we just have to know if you are 100% sure it has the wide orifice.

If it's not a Motorcraft OEM thermostat, it's probably the problem. Plus, it just sounds like a thermostat problem. Air in the system in my experience doesn't cause the car to 'terminally overheat'. It caused the gauge to fluctuate wildly when I had air in my system, not a stable rise to overheating.

When mine was not bled it would run fine in garage. Out on road in 5 mile loop it would overheat big time(peg gauge) and blow out fluid. Bleed and all better.

Stays cool at idle and gets hot when moving tells me air is in the system.

Don't mean to hijack but my friend has an aviator. While just sitting it'll overheat. Idk if it does while moving or not he just said it got hot and boiled out cap. While he was getting ready for work while it cooled down with the A/C. Ima try bleeding it for him.

"While he was getting ready for work while it cooled down with the A/C." Huh???/

thanks guys, when i pulled the thermostat it was the same as the one that came out of it so that shouldnt be the issue, been letting it sit and filling on a flush t thats back by my firewall and its been taking a LOT of water so im hoping this works need the thing back on the road

When I did my oil filter adapter gasket, and since coolant came out of the block. I got a gallon of straight coolant and mixed myself, any ways I filled up the tank first not running it of course. Popped the screw off the crossover, slowly filled till it topped off. Fired up for about 2 minutes built a little pressure, cracked open screw to release pressure took screw off filled again put cap back on and fired again did this about 5 times. Also did it with the heater on too idk if it made a difference or not but I have no problems. Oh btw I live in SoCal so right now I'm in 95+ heat for the past 3 weeks so far and no problems. Hope this helped

Had a similar overheating issue with my old '96. Idling it was normal. Drive it up the street and it would get hot. I ended up installing a 160 degree thermostat for a Mustang Cobra and burping the system multiple times and from that point it never, ever got past the "M" again. Ran cool as a cucumber :)

I hate to push the issue but, at least in my mind, you still haven't confirmed that you have the correct thermostat. It might not have had the right one to begin with. It might be possible to bleed the cooling system with a small orifice thermostat. Maybe the last person somehow did it. Honestly I don't know if it's possible or not.

Assuming the correct thermostat...
With mine, after topping off through the crossover tube with the thermostat open and the reserve cap on, and letting it burp for a good long while, I STILL had to come back about three times after the engine had fully cooled to top off at the crossover plug again. It took me a couple of days.

just had a bunch of air in the system, let it sit for a couple days and then kept filling it without running it through a flush "T" that i put in two years ago, doesnt overheat had it on the highway for an hour and its fine. now to do my trans swap -_-

i have the same issue. The previous owner replaced the thermostat, the water pump and the radiator are all original. Im losing coolant when im idle is ""normal temp".Go and drive on the freeway the temp spikes and all the coolant has left the overfill and the radiator hoses are all soft and mushy . I REALLY WANT TO KNOW WTF TO DO TO FIX THIS .....ive owned more than 3 marks l never had this issue before.... can anyone help....

Have you bled the air out of the system correctly? Do you know exactly which thermostat the previous owner installed? How much coolant are you losing? Any white traces of evaporated coolant on the engine? No signs of coolant in the oil, transmission fluid, or exiting the exhaust?

i dont have any iformation about the thermostat he used. im loosing all the coolant in the res. tank and when i open the bledder from the cossover its spraying everywhere.there is no trace of oil in collant mix and not trace off white resi anywhere... i noticed today that its spraying from the upper rad hose and im stumped. talk to the master tech here at work and hes CLAIMS blown head gaskets with out even looking at the car
