So I have had my mark for about 3 months now and I decided to change the spark plugs, It seems to me that who ever had it before had put them in wrong, but there was oil in two of the wholes, So far I only changed two because I noticed that the Coil pack boot's are pretty worn so I decided to go get new ones and do it right, I seems like i have white smoke coming out of the tail pipes now though. Any one have a clue of what may be going on? A friend of mine also told me that my car seem like it lags a bit. I open to Ideas and suggestions. I also just replaced the fuel presure regulator and the o2 sensors before the cats. My mark is a 97 non lsc.

the oil is caused from the spark plug journal oil seals leaking, they are under the valve covers, the only way to change them is to remove the valve covers. there are 8 total they stop oil from leaking into the journals but when they do the spark plugs take a bath in oil. getting the valve covers off isnt fun, but is doable. you can get the 8 seals and 2 new valve cover gaskets from fel-pro, autozone had the kit in stock when i removed mine to powdercoat them, i think the gasket set was around 60 bucks.

probably a good idea to look at it, but mine did the same thing and it was sitting for awhile when I bought it after a few months of driving I've changed spark plugs twice and have noticed no oil since the first spark plug change maybe same issue just car sitting for awhile maybe not. My engine still isn't in the best of shape either way though.

thanks guys, I will do that cause Besides the oil on the spark plugs my engine is very strong.

I am guessing that the smoke will go away. It was probally caused by the oil leking down into the cylinder when you removed the spark plugs. It should clear up after it burns away.

Jamie97lsc has it correct about fixing the oil leak. If it's not that bad then you may be able to leave it but the oil may swell & ruin the new boots.

BTW, I saw you driving one day near Owens & Bonanza. I was the one who reved my engine at the light.

Good luck.

Manieg, you need to read my post. I just had the very same problem with my Mark. One of my spark plugs detinated and totally destroyed one of my COP's. I too had oil in all of my plug holes, and had white smoke coming out of my tail pipe. You want to make darn sure that any of your plugs are not stripped. That is a PITA, and I had to have that done professionally.

Changing the valve covers on the Mark are not for the faint of heart. You have to remove a lot of stuff to get those valve covers off. The passenger side is the easiest. The driver's side is another PITA all together. The brake booster has to come out in order to get that valve cover out. If you are not patient, I suggest you you have it done.

lol im far from patient but i can still do it, i just invent lots of really bad words, some of which have never even been used before in the english language, when i put mine back on after powder coating them, my wife tried to be nice and suprise me at my shop with dinner and she ended up leaving really upset with me and my food was tossed all over the work bench :( g-man is right, its very frustrating to do them, so if you like your family and want them to remain your family, dont try this anywhere near them, or just pay someone lol.

Lol. Same here! I had to repair some patio furniture after an 'episode' involving grille repainting! :D

Seems on the Mark, most things are hard the first time, but after that its all dead easy! :)
