I decided to do a spark plug change. I popped off the passenger side cover and to my surprise my spark plug boots/coil pack are not tight at all to the plug. Not only are they not tight, but they are just kind of floating there.

When I pulled the boot off it was SOAKED with oil! Not thinking this is a good thing at all obviously. So what do I do?

The car didn't run like it had issues so I'm confused how the boot can just be floating on the plug and it still run & idle fine. I'm also confused with it being that soaked with oil how it can run ok.

The valve covers have seals around each of the plug holes. They go bad letting oil into the well. It will eventually start to mis as the boot will start to fall apart.

My LS had a few like that and wasn't missing. I found it changing the plugs. I cleaned it all out and still is running fine....will eventually start to mis but so far so good.
 
I just wanted to let you know that this also happen to me but I had already replaced the valve cover gaskets and all of the spark plug seals so my only problem is when I pulled the MSD Spark plug wire the metal connector was still on the plug and not on the wire. MSD sent me a new wire and everything has been running fine every since.
 
So should I change the plugs now or should I save the motorcraft platinums for when I fix the valve cover and throw some cheap coppers in there?

How hard is a valve cover change? I don't have access to a shop, but I do have a compressor with air gun & ratchet. I also have a chop saw...but don't think I'll need that for this. lol.

What's the consequences to letting it go for awhile?
 
Upon further searching on the site it seems as if the pass side valve cover is easy to get off but you need to jack up that side of the engine. Where would I put the jack?

Should I leave the drivers side be if there isn't any leaking there?
 
Remove the master cylinder, place a bottle rack on the frame and against the block /upward angle/ with a small piece of wood to protect the engine/exhaust manifold and jack it just a little until you can slide the cover up and over the cams. It looks hard but really isn't. Just be care full I have seen people brake the covers back lip trying to get it out.

Say what?

What's a bottle rack?

And what's that part about block/upward angle mean?

One has to undo the motor mounts, no? Good time to replace those maybe?
 
im scared to check mine LOL ill check mine but first i need to know is there part numbers for this type of job to do?
 
if you have any doubt about being able to do it yourself then dont, the driverside cover sucks, and above it said it looks hard but really is easy, B.S

i've been around these cars day in and day out for 11 years and that valve cover is not easy, it can be done, and with patience can be done in reasonable time, but it isnt easy, specially for someone who has never attempted it. dont let the oil go for long, you will end up wrecking the boots on the coils and costing yourself more money. the gasket set from felpro is pretty cheap, autozone stocks it. the pass side is easier, but you still have to pull off the throttle body. its a sucky job plain and simple.
 
well first, go buy a bunch of cans of brake cleaner.......

pull one plug at a time, spray brake cleaner into the cylinder, just enough to wash the oil down, put a rag over the opening, crank the engine, maybe let it run for a sec or two...............all the oil will spray out, repeat with other cylinders............

the pass side cover is easy, on that side i got the throttle body off and got the upper intake loose to pull the valve cover out................

driver side........... see pics, and like jamie said, it just takes a long time to get that side.

The v/c gaskets are F7LZ-6584-AA/BA and list for 18.45 each and cost you $15.59 each gold members cost is 14.39 each. The s/plug seals P/N F5LY-6C527-A list for 4.61 each and cost you 3.90 each or gold pays $3.60 each .
So a gold member would pay $57.58 for the both sides and reg pay $62.38
Plus shipping of course..

If I hadn't already purchased the Felpro, I definitely would have ordered from you max. That's ok I've got other things I'm planning on calling you about.
 
Passenger side fixed. Man 8 hours later I finally got it done (or pretty close to 8 hours). Not easy by any means, but don't bother doing this without jacking up the engine. I spent two hours toying with the valve cover until I finally decided to go buy a jack and jack up the engine. 3-4 of those hours was spent wrestling with the valve cover, and then finding a jack. After that it was fairly straightforward.

Working on my wifes GM though I realize Ford products are a lot easier to work on. You just have to keep your composure!
 
i did my passenger side in 30mins :) , no jack or nothing.............

drivers side, probably 4hrs........with jack.
 
I'm actually kind excited for my VCG's to go cause I will put on my spare valve covers after having them powder coated :)

Thats my comeback,my Galant (LS) doesn't have that problem. :leghumper
