Hey great to be here, am picking up a 96 mk viii lsc and converting air suspension to strut masters kit, its on the way, current issue is the rack is leaking. Do you have to drop the cross member to get at it? Looks to be migrating from the pinion housing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Newbie to the MK8

Rack can be pulled without dropping the cradle. Welcome to the site.

Does anyone have any 1,2,3's about how to go about it. Looks like its gonna be a pain. Any short cuts or tips? Thanks. Hobart, Indiana is south of Chicago.

Ive done it a couple times...so I'll tell you the easiest way..

Unless you've got hands and arms smaller than my 5 year old.. Get an engine brace, remove alternator, then bolt the chains to the lower alternator bolt holes, remove strut upper nuts from the strut tower..remove engine mount bolts (the lower bolt, one each side), Remove 8 engine cradle bolts, then LOWER the sub frame a few inches ( like 3 or 4) this will give you plenty of room to remove the rack lines...

Good luck

You eat a big bowl of Urpa Durpa this morning?
You have only swapped it one time and I was there. Yes we dropped the cradle but thats cause we were REPLACING THE CRADLE.

The bolts are accesable and so is the rag joint. Unbolt the rag, unbolt the tie rods, unbolt the rack, invent new swear words, remove rack and then reverse that order...... except add more swearing while bolting the rag joint back.

Oh yeah, forgot about those. I had to make a stubby 18mm for one.

Mark viii newbie

The car found me. Person that I was doing some work for on their airplane asked me if I would be interested in the car. He's the original owner. The car has sat for 3 years. 160k miles, tranny rebuilt with shift kit 30k ago and rear end replaced. Interior is nearly mint. The front air suspensions bad so going to replace it all with coil conversion. New front end also being installed. After doing some research about car discovered its following and looks to be something I could toy with so here goes. After driving it to the shop the rack puked so Im at that point now. Im sure Ill be asking more questions as you all have the expertise..

that is a 96 LSC only 13, 380 (or close to that) made...Please, SERIOUSLY consider keeping the air ride. It isn't difficult and well worth keeping the Marks signature trate to lower itself to become one with the air it is slicing thru.. and to level out the load in the cabin.. read up before shuttin him down. Only the cheap and lazy go with the conversion (hehehe-once you become more familiar with the site, you will get that jab ;)

Nice score, wish I woulda rolled up on it - you found the year model and color I want and been looking for a few years now!!

here's the Mark VIII intro in 93:
1993 Lincoln Mark VIII Manufacturers Promotional Video - YouTube

Rich - post the commercial of the Mark stopping at the steel beam, then rolling under the steel beam @50mph cause the air ride lowered it... I couldn't find it

wow great looking car. Nice color combo. You need to take the headlights out and wetsand and buff them, in will improve the looks of the car tremendously, not to mention the better light output.

Air Ride was Lincolns single biggest mistake..why would anyone keep an expensive suspension system that its most signature trait ...is failure?

please reconsider changeing the air ride. go to AIR AMERICA web site for a lot of information Eddie Spinks is an ex ford tech and great guy with great products. as an ex jet mech working on marks i have found a lot of the same problems messie, tight quartes, and vocabulary increasing. nice find and welcome to the site. join us on chat room tonight if you are available around 1900(7:00 pm cdst).
