Hey all...I'm a hardcore ford fan for years..>I've currently got 2 66 mustang coupes I'm working on, a 72 maverick undergoing full restification that we bought new....and my daily driver, a 99 p71 x lapd crown vic.

The crown vic handles and drives absolutely amazing for a huge tank. It's given me back the taste of modern performance that I haven't had since I sold my last fox mustang. However, it's a 2 ton boat with a non pi 2valve motor...lol.

The mark viii's seem to sum up everything I want in a car...I've got a company vehicle so I don't drive much in my personal vehicles, yet I need a back-up ride to the minivan to throw my three kids in the back should the need arise.

I was looking at the lt1 impalas...but they're still a little too pricey for the age imo.

I'm looking today at a 98 mark viii lsc that I found locally for $3500...silver, 141k miles...supposed to have immaculate paint and interior and have no mechanical problems...and comes freshly smogged.

If it is what it says it is I'll probably pick it up. He says it's negotiable too...so I'll probably offer him $2900-3k.

I've got some concern about the reliability though. Now, I can spin a wrench forward and backward and build a car from the ground up efi or carb'd....but I'm too busy for that. I'm looking for something that doesn't break down every day. I know the 4rw70 trannies that come in them are basically bullit proof...and the modular motors are ok too. I'm slightly worried about the 141k miles...too much in your opinion?? Or is that fine?? I would prefer not to be swapping motors in it anytime soon. I'll probably put 5-6k miles a year on it tops.

He says the airbags work and all electronics work....but I'm looking for honest exeriences here and opinions if I should pick this up or not...thanks!

mileage isn't really a factor with mark viiis. just how well they were taken care of.

thanks for the input guys....that helps a ton.

any input about the airbag system? how often do they go out? Are they ez to replace??Junkyard mark viii's are common, but are the airbag's available aftermarket like autozone?

American Air for parts.

They last about ten years. Very simple system to work on.

when taken care of ford mod motors run forever you have a p71 2v 4.6 mod motor a friend i have runs a cab company and has a few reaching 300,000 miles yes they are worn out useing oil etc. but still running, not saying they all will go this far or not to check the engine out but if the engine purrs and has been takeing care of i'd be more worried about the suspension at that mileage not so much the air ride that says is good but balljoints, swaybarlink bushings etc. i also just went from a p71 to a mark viii only thing i miss about the p71 is everybody in the fast lane getting over for the cop coming!!:D

I agree, it's all about the maintenance.

I've said it before and repeat it again... the best Mark VIIIs are the well maintained ones that are now slammed due to suspension issues. The owners likely parked them and put them up for sale once they got the sticker shock from the dealer for the cost of the repairs. You can fix them back to their original glory for not that much money and time while getting one helluva deal on the car.

well I looked at it...the car was absolutely amazing...owned by an old 70ish year old guy since 11k miles...serviced religiously at ford it's whole life with all receipts...paint and interior immaculate, every single mechanical and electrical thing worked like the day it rolled off the line.

I was in process of making a $3k deal when the girl from yesterday called him up and said she was on her way with cash :(...it's sunday, my bank is closed...I lost the car right from under my eyes...ah well I'll keep looking

Sucks you missed out on that one.

Go PI swap your Vic, it's not that time consuming (ok, maybe a little) or expensive. And get a Mark VIII too. I have an 02 P71 and it's a good compliment to my Mark and the rest of the fleet.

My Vic is also over 205k, runs perfectly, doesn't seem to burn any oil. 2v or 4v, the motors last forever.

Oh, and 98 or newer 4R70Ws are a good trans but far from bulletproof. 97 and older are a crapshoot.

My father just sold his 2003 Town Car with 450k miles on it, hard NYC Limo miles too. Valve covers were never off, tranny never changed. No smoke, ran like a top. His 99 Town car had 430k , with a bit of smoke at start up.

thanks again guys...i found the below 98 lsc with 98k miles for about $4kish..gonna go look at it tomorrow

too bad the interior isn't black, but at least the tan stuff is in good condition
