I got the CEL, of course its the coils, covered under the warranty program for my '03. I told them to check the coils when I brought it in, but they claimed they were fine, the problem was the throttle body, and charged $900 to replace that and associated wiring. of course that didn't fix the problem, THEN they did the coil repair. Do I have any recourse ot get my money back for a throttle body I probably didn't need?

This was at sesi lincoln mercury in ypsilanti, I'll never be going back there.

etc fail safe -- coils or TB sensor

Interesting. i just took mine in to sesi Ann Arbor and was given the same diagnosis. they claim that they are sure it's the TB sensor and not the coil. Actually had a coil replaced in October of last year. I will be pissed if they come back and then tell me it's the coil.

what symptoms did you have, etc fail safe mode, engine stall?

tell them you want your old parts reinstalled and a FULL refund.

Then ask if it was the TPS... if it was, ask why the :q:q:q:q they didn't just replace just the sensor.

I had a similar issue, only took it to the dealership because I was really busy... well, I wasn't going to be suckered into a throttle body; I swapped around my coils and threw on a $40 TPS... problem solved.

Sounds like inexperienced techs throwing parts at a problem, hoping for a fix.

Yep, I HATE mechanics like that. The dealership I bought my LS from has a guaranteed fix policy. What they diagnose, they guarantee that it's the problem, or else you don't pay for it. When the car was overheating intermittently, they correctly diagnosed and replaced the CHT sensor. Strange thing too... it was a Chevy dealer...

common issue with the misfires causing the throttle-by-wire to get messed up by the interference - it throws a code and the tech thinks that's the problem....

They cannot charge you for parts and time spent not fixing the issue - however - you'll have to return the new part....

definentely fight it. and if the dealership won't do anything about it, call or email ford customer care.

Back in the shop

well, throttle body replaced yesterday, drove great for less than 24 hrs. fail safe message and near engine stall on the highway on the way to work this morning. that sucks. anxious to know if the code says TB again. if so, maybe they will listen to my suggestion regarding the coils based upon what i read here.

Tell them to put your old parts back on, replace your coils and refund you the difference between the two.

It IS NOT the throttle body. Chances are you've got a RF disturbance with Coil #4. Worst case scenario, TPS (which can be replaced for $40)

Thankfully they duplicated the problem and confirmed it was a coil full refund coming yippee thanks for all the info guys

Just goes to show - the techs don't always know! Lol. Glad it got sorted.
