What would a person have to do to change from a Reg. Automatic to a Select Shift Auto? Or would a Person be better off going to Manaul?

Its all in the shifter assembly itself not the whole tranny. Try searching this forum there are several threads on this. I believe there is a step by step how to on it.

correct - all autos have the ability to be 'select shift' - it's simply the shifter.

There are many threads on this - search for 'SST'

No thanx!

From what I read after doing a search it seems Im better off with my reg. Automatic. Right?

I dont know that its any better or worse it just gives you the option to select which gear you want via pushing up or down in the lever. I have the "regular" auto and would like the SST but my v6 will never be "fast" so unless one fall in my lap for an extemly low price I wont change it.

They pop up on ebay from time to time. I got mine for ~$90 shipped. Try Bill Jenkins at Team Ford. He should be able to hook you up with a good price.

Again, it's just the shifter mechanism that differentiates the "regular" automatic from the "SelectShift" automatic. The swap can be done pretty easily. You don't need a pcm reflash unless you want/need to be able to select D4. The trans will still work just fine.

just curious as to what could happen if you did put it in D4 without the pcm flash?

You would be in 3rd. The window would also show 3rd, even though the shifter shows D4. The computer reads the shifter mechanism vertically. The non-SST shifter goes..

P
R
N
D5 D4
......3
......2
......1

The SST shifter is read:

P
R
N
D5
D4

As you can see, vertically below D5 on the non-SST shifter is 3.

why bother?

I have it on my car, and never use it.

o ok i see. so if you didn't do the flash and bumped the 'new' sst shifter over to the sst mode would you be putting it in D4 or does it not work that way.

Once you move the shifter over to SST shift mode you will get full SST function.

I was given this when I was looking to do this conversion. Heres how the dealership will have to "fix" the D4 problem.
Here's the proceedure, as used by a Lincoln dealer shop foreman:

Plug the car into the WDS,
-When the WDS asks if the displayed vin is correct, enter "NO"
-When prompted for the correct vin, enter the car's vin (yes, I know it's the same vin, but the computer has already forgotten what vin it displayed)
-A menu of calibrations will pop up. Select the 50 state version of the sport calibration.
-Your installed SST shifter will now function correctly (as in you'll have D4).

Sounds like more of a pain than its worth. Might as well just push the button and shift between the gears. Not like it'll change anything, its all electronic. Once the shifter is moved out of park that is the end of the shifter cables job inside the transmission. From then on it relies on the shifter plate to determine which gear the selector is placed in and the electronic shift solenoids will adjust accordingly. The only difference is that with the SST shifter you select which gear the transmission goes to by moving the shifter between 2 buttons. On the regular shifter you select the gear by moving the paddle to the corresponding number on the plate.

Not quite. With SST you can hold 4th and 5th gear. The only ones you can hold with the non-SST shifter is 1-3.

kinda confused

I thought sst was like having the shifter lock into 1 2 3 4 5, so if you wanted to manualy shift it you could! I was going onto the hyway one day and just for the hell of it i droped ir down in 2 and wound ir out till 60.

That being the one exception. But what I was geting at is just because your car might not have the SST shifter, doesn't mean that you cant still shift between the gears yourself.

True. I installed the SST as my old shifter must have had a weak spot between 2nd and 3rd. That, or I was a little "aggressive" in my gear shifting. I don't have that problem with the SST.
