Modern day Mark VIII ?

So I was thinking today......

What new cars today are in the luxury coupe market are in the same price range as the mark viii was 15 years ago?

given that the average mark viii was right around $40k in 95 (some more, some less)

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, $40k in 1994 = $56308 in 2009 (2010 too new to calculate).

So I found myself thinking about luxury couple around that price range. Let me tell you, from what I gather, there arent that many anymore.

I have come up with a few possible options though.

2010 Audi S5 Coupe - Base price $52k

6 Speed, 4.2L 354HP V8, AWD

2011 Cadillac CTS-V Coupe - My or may not be a production car

6.2L V8 556 HP

2010 Mercedes Benz E550 Coupe- Base Price $55k

5.5L SOHC 332HP V8

2010 BMW M3 Coupe - Base Price $58K

420 HP V8 RWD

In my eyes, these are the only competitors. Im sure there are more I'm missing. There are a ton of luxury coups out there in that same price range (Audi TT, BMW Z4, Porsche Cayman, Corvette, etc) but if they dont have a back seat, and isnt classified as a luxury car like that mark viii was, I dont feel they belong in the same category.

There are many that are quite a bit cheaper, if you want to sacrifice on performance, looks, class, etc, like:

2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe - Base Price $30k
2010 Lexus IS 250C - Base Price $38K
2010Nissan 370Z\Infiniti G37 Coupe - Base Price $37K
2010 Camaro \ Challenger - Base Price $40k (SS and SRT version)

What do you guys think?

The market and technology has changed radically over the past 15 years.
It'd also be interesting to look at the competition the Mark was facing back in the 90s.

The Eldorado. The Lexus SC300 and 400. The supercharged Riviera.
I'm not sure what the German's were offering between 93-98 though.

You can wipe the Camaro, Challenger, and base 370z/Genesis coupe off the list. Their interiors can't even compare to our 'dated' Lincolns.

I think Lincoln could pull off a MKS coupe (especially with the ecoboost motor), it would compete with the CTS-V coupe.

camaro SS base isnt 40k....



the 2SS (top of the line) is 33k. SRT is 43k, iirc

That CTS-V coupe is going to be one heck of a sleeper!

Impressive drive train, but not too nice looking. Damn small windows!

The Eco v-6 in a MKS coupe wouldnt be able to compete (performance wise) with the CTS-V. It could prolly handle better (or not) but 350ish is not enough to go against the Vette V-8 in that thing. Now if someone could hack the code and turn up the wick on them turbos then we may have something. Or a larger pair of hair dryers pumping out 20+ psi and making 500 at all four wheels..... now that would be something I would put a mortage on my house for.

I crap you not. If Lincoln made a MKS Coupe with the AWD Eco Boost and there were enough SHOs out there breaking the ground for boost mods then I would buy one.

I would have a hrd time deciding which was the DD and which was the Toy though. :lol:

While I am willing to spend $50K on a brand new, only owned by me car like that I am not willing to drop $15K in one lump sum to supe up a 12 year old almost 100K mile car. Thats just me.

Now that one CE Mark that has 272 miles on it for sale, I would do it to that one without hesitating. But I wouldnt pay 36K for that car. If he would take 20K then I would prolly get a mortage and buy it then drop it off to have the Aluminator motor dropped in with a 6 speed and its engine/trans would go in the 98 and still be a DD. I could be happy paying that off over 15 years :lol:
But the CE would have 6 piston brakes and custom 19" wheels and..... damnit! Now you got me in La-La land again! :lol:

I agree however I think the regular CTS is more along the lines of what the Mark VIII is. An SVT version with a GT500 motor is what the CTS-V would compare to. IMHO the Audi S5 and E class coupe are good examples of what class the Mark would be in. The M3 is to small the G37 is small and a step down. The BMW 6 series despite costing more is a good example as well.

I would definitely consider one. SHOs are in the 12s already with hardly anything more then a tune.

People who dont know Marks get in my car and swear its gotta be a current design. That kinda got me mad cause the Marks interior is flowing and curvy. All new cars are just boxy inside. No curves and gental sweeps. Its all right angles.
