Mini spool?

The entire rear end came out of an alcohol funny car many years ago, the locker was modified to where it wouldn't "rachet" like you're talking about..it is essentially a locked rear end now..and the tires are a little wide for the 8" weld wheel so that may have something to do with the slight buldge to the center of the tread but eitherway if it were a posi there wouldn't me nearly as much tread wear in comparison to what's in there now.

Thats two TOTALLY different things then, thats a SPOOL vs a locker. Also was the car tubbed? HUGE rear tires? If so they wear in the middle naturally anyway because of the size. Every tubbed car I ever had always wore the tires out in the middle. A locker can be used on the street any and every day all day. Again Like I stated the spool experience I have had produce 0 issues. I drove my 8.80 Bracket Malibu for the entire Summer of 2009 with a spool and 513 gears again 0 issues and that has 33 spline Strange "RACE ONLY" axels. I put over 3k HARD miles on it too. I MISS THAT CAR. malibu-10.jpgmalibu-23.jpgmalibu-24.jpg

Nice Bu'! love those g bodies, and no car isn't tubbed it has 8" welds with 28x10" hoosier QTPs.

Yes, a spool can be used on the street, especially if you're willing to run a bias-ply with a decent amount of sidewall. That doesn't mean that it makes a lick of sense to stick one in a daily driver 14 second Mark VIII with stock IRS on skinny ass street radials.

Yes it was a FUN ride, ran the 8.90 index and was hairy as all holy hell on the street!! It was SO funny driving into Atco, running a 8.98 and driving home, I miss those days.

LOL. I love to bring up Burbank LSC a lot if anyone hasn't noticed. Built on a budget. 10s with no spool. Looked to me like he launched pretty good with 1.5 shorts and no spool of any sort. I might have to talk to Mo Lones about this one. He is planning to run 9s in his Gen1 and is shooting for if not AT 700 rwhp, huge procharger setup and twin pumps. If he isn't running a spool, I think this idea has been squashed. As a matter of fact, I messaged him. I'll take his word when it comes to Mark8s. He has the fastest Mark8 with the 4.6 that I know of in existence and was running 11s in his slow days. I will let you know what I hear. ;)

Nice Malibu. That is massively different from a Mark VIII though. ;) And hell yeah, it probably NEEDS a spool running 8s. That car would destroy spider gears! LOL

Thanks. It wasn't about if you NEED it or not, thats what your saying now for some reason. All IM saying again that in my personal experience with street cars that have had spools I have had 0 issues. Slicks, Drag Radials, Bias, Radial...etc. The spool is just a more econimical way to go vs a trac loc too, usually found for $60 to $90.00. Like I said We have installed 5 in Marks so far and had no problems. It's just an option. You really want to be "in the middle best of both worlds" then get a Detriot Locker and be done with it..

That's pretty damn streetable if you drove that to and from the track! Here's the car I was talking about, fun little car..I love driving it! These are the only pics i have of it in my photobucket..one pic is from the early 80s the other is how it currently looks.

That is SICKKK!!! LOVE IT!! Put the Centerline Auto Drags back on it.

Its too bad my dad sold them back in 1990, i liked the way it looked too..i think polished woulda been better though.

Response:

"Well the CV shafts have a spring clip on them. To run a spool, you would have to have a groove machined into the inside of the spool to encompass that clip. Furthermore, a spool would be quite harsh to the cv shafts.
In short-
Possible? -Yes
Practical? -No

A good locker/"posi" would provide a better result, and be more "street friendly".

Don't get me wrong, spools have their place. Just not in an IRS car."

In case you want to know, I think he is going to be shooting for 9s in his car. Somewhere around 700 rwhp. This guy is no joke. I didn't just ask Joe Shmo about this one. I went straight to the source of someone who has a Mark8 that is one of if not the fastest 4.6 Mark8s in existence. Joe Shmo has a bolt-on Mark8 with gears and an intake and runs a spool on the street, but Joe Shmo is a dumbass.

If this is the same guy that I think it is, he is a grudge racer and he called out Burbank LSC on youtube who ran 10.60s and basically said, "sorry, but your Mark8 is not the fastest" LOL I wasn't buying it until I read the huge laundry list of modifications that he has done to his car. I don't think that I have ever seen a nastier build in my life on a 4.6 Mark8 I don't know what his plans are for obtaining traction, but from what I have seen his car will not hook on ET Streets from a dig or from a 35mph roll. He will probably be needing some tubed tires with beadlocks to go anywhere ever.

Thats what I said from GREEN light.

"In short-
Possible? -Yes
Practical? -No"

I stated I we have put these in 5 Marks since 1997 and had 0 issues, thats all, merely expressing my in shop peronal experience with a particular part. SO above is basically what I said.

Then I also said this this: "You really want to be "in the middle best of both worlds" then get a Detriot Locker and be done with it.. " thanks.
