Mark VIII Project

I think Ill just spend the damn money and go with kooks, they fit well from what Ive heard and there are no modifiactions to made.
 
I couldn't get the coolant system to fill properly. I thought I had it burped and I put the crossover fill plug in. About thirty seconds after I put the plug in the water pump started leaking. I was also wisping white smoke out of the crossover right after I started it up.

I know that the car had straight water in the sytem and then sat out all winter. I will do some more tests and see if it is bad or not.

After looking at the general condition of the car I'm leaning towards parting it out and maybe buying a nicer one to build off of. This one is in really bad shape, The deeper I dig the more stuff i find thats messed up.

I hate to say it, but you MAY be right about the digging part.
 
So I did a little more digging, yesterday. Luckily I didn't find anything that I didn't already expect. The entire car just needs to be gone over, I'm pulling the motor and dropping the front subframe. This will allow me to go over everything in the front end of the car. While I have the motor I plan on painting the engine compartment.

Now I just need to pick out a color, thinking about a blue.

The one nasty thing I did find was the very bent peice of the unibody. My geuss is someone used a jack to lift the car from that spot and bent the crap out of it.

I did that to my car twice before i realized that it was getting bent good thing my didn't bend that bad though
 
I am pulling the motor out my parts car this weekend and will be prepping it to go into my car. I made a quick list of all the things I plan on doing to the motor while its out. If anyone has any other suggestion I'd like to here them because I want to do as much as possible while it's on a motor stand.

Here's the list:
Remove the oil pan, sandblast, repaint, and replace the gasket.
Replace the front and rear crank seals
Powder coat the valve covers and replace the gaskets
Powdercoat the font engine cover and replace the gasket
Replace the oil filter adapter gasket
Powder coat the coolant crossover and replace the gaskets
Put on a fluid damper crank pulley
Repalce the idler puller and tensioner
Replace stock manifolds with either Cobra manifolds or maybe kooks header and dead soft aluminum gaskets

I decided on a color sceme for my car, Black on Black, with silver and black for the engine. Not the most exciting but I con't find anything classier or cleaner then a perfect black paintjob.

How about replacing the IAC and EGR tube and valve? Those are a huge PITA to do while the engine is in the car.
 
you should also post up some pictures of your progress, I think everyone here enjoys seeing people work on these things
 
how worthwhile is a stiffer front sway bar? If I'm going to upgrade it I might as well do it when I drop the Subframe when I have the motor out.

If it is worth it what would people recomend?
 
You'll notice a difference in the corners, for sure.

Mine's 1¼ and I’ve noticed a lot less body roll in the corners.

Call up addco and have them send you one. They’re.. Hell, I don’t remember, but I want to say, around 120ish? Make sure they send you New polyurethane bushings, and bushing grease. They forgot to send the grease with mine. You will want to grease those bushings, else they’ll squeak like a mother.
 
The good news is that I finally got my prioreties a little straightened out and have done some actual work on the car. I brought the "new" motor inside and am getting it prepped.

I have a few questions.

Where can I get all the torque specs for the engine fasteners? I like to actually torque things to the correct spec.

I bought a new rear crank seal but I am leary of replacing it. What is the procedure for doing this? I 'm nervous about doing this because If I screw it up I'll either have to pull the motor or drop the tranny, not good.

Is there any place i can purchase ends that will bolt onto the Cobra exhaust manifolds? I don't feel like fabbing the ends before building the exhaust.

I'm planning on running not cats, a double x pipe, no mufflers, and dumps before the rear tires. I know it will be LOUD, but will this have adverse affects on the motor? I heard that too free flowing exhaust can hurt the motor?

I just ordered most of the gaskets from Oreilly's. They couldn't get me the oil filter adapter gasket though which I don't understand why.

I'm disassembling the motor and cleaning/sandblasting and paitning everything before dropping it in.

Usually a haynes/chilton manual will have all your torque specs... a 4.6L building book will too (such as the sean hyland motorsports manual)

Same problem,My valve stem did cause the headers not to install correctly but once removed they fit like a glove,all i hope is that my car is faster now but i have been unable to drive it due to flat tires.
 
Chiltons should have your torque spec's.go to ther local parts store and check the book before you buy it.i have one and if i find it i will let you know the spec's

I think I will subscribe to the AllDATA for the car, seems like it would be more than worthwhile.

I haven't much time to work on the car with school lately, but I did spend some money on it. I bought all the gaskets I intend on replacing and some heavy duty paint to fix a bit of rust.
