Paint it to match your car. Waaaaaaaay easier than even trying to swap the trim. Search my old threads. Nothing you can't accomplish with spray cans!

You'd have to go to an auto paint store and have it loaded

Did you also paint your grille and the chrome pieces under the lights? Or just the LSC moldings? I tried painting my door handle after it broke and a month later it started to peal off. It might be because I didn't prime it but I did buy one from ford dealer ship and it looked like it was already primed. You mind going over your processes again and where you bought your paint supplies from? There are sites online where I was thinking about buying the right color code and going that route.

From what I have gathered, you have to apply a adhesive promoter, prime 2 times, spray paint 3 times and clearcoat 2 times...

What's this ruckus about not being able to paint over chrome? I took it to the lincoln dealership and macco and they both wouldn't paint over chrome.

You answered your own question. :)

This is how I've done it with pretty much every car I've owned!

  1. Sand down the area you are going to paint & tape off all the surrounding areas.
  2. Wipe clean with either paint thinner, paint cleaner or even rubbing alchohol. (Rubbing alchohol is actually pretty good & you can steal it from your wife's medicine cabinet) :D
  3. Spray primer all over the entire area. Keep the can 10 - 12 inches away. Do not use continuous spraying. DO it back & forth in 1 - 2 second intervals until you have covered all the area.
  4. Let that primer sit for at least one hour. You don't want wet paint underneath other layers. This is key!!!
  5. Throw the 2nd layer of primer. Wait about 30 minutes then lightly sand the surface to take away any inperfactions. Use 300 grit then 1000 grit then 2000 grit.
  6. Use the same cleaner you have been using to clean the surface again.
  7. Spray your last layer of primer. Let this layer dry very, very well. Touch the surface, if you feel any imperfections, sand it with 2000 grit paper to take roughness away. (In my case since I have additional vehicles to drive the following day, I usually don't paint over the primer it until the next day but you can paint over it in 3 - 4 hours)
  8. Go ahead & spray the first coat of paint, wait 30 minutes & spray the surface again (Don't be shy during this 2nd coat. You need to make sure you fill in any missed spots). Depending on how you sprayed it, this should be enough paint. Black is usually a bit more difficult & may need a 3rd coat.
  9. Finally spray on the first coat of clear. Wait about 1 hour or so & spray the 2nd coat. This is when you must let that paint really stick. DO NOT TOUCH IT, DO NOT SPRAY ANYMORE for at least 5 hours.
  10. Use light sand paper, (1000 grit should be great) then wipe clean with the same solvent you were using.
  11. Spray another coat of clear & let it set for about 1 hour. You can layer on as many coats as you'd like. Just remember to wait about an hour between coats.
  12. Once you are satisfied let everything set for about a week then use a light (2000 grit) wet sanding & wax.

VOILA!!! You are done!

I live in Miami so the area you live in, the humidity, the heat, etc... are all factors that affect the time between coats.

They don't want to be liable. I've painted over chrome & never had an issue!

Alex, I know you have done a lot of rattle can work but I am going to say that you are going too far with your sanding in the primer stage. 2000 before you put a color on? You are taking all the adhesion away that the sanding is trying to create. 2000 is like polishing and I think you are asking for trouble there.

I have never gone any further than 800 wet on primer 600 dry for single stage paint.

Because if its not prepped perfectly it peels eventually which they would have to warranty

Because you NEED to use Self Etching Primer FIRST as a pair step, after its been roughed with 1000 grit
