Loose Steering....Shaking wwhile Braking...

Hey guys, i've been neglecting my warped front rotors for about a year now, and i've noticed that my steering wheel has become really loose feeling.

At a dead stop, the steering wheel has 2 inches of play left and right, meaning that i can move the steering wheel 2 inches left or right and then the wheels turn.

Bushings? Steering rack?

I can't do the work myself, how much would a mechanic charge to replace front rotors/pads and bushings?

Honestly i've been shopping around for another car, but i might just sink some money into this car. After all it's a 96 LSC with 68K miles and it drives HARD...no trans slipping or anything. Besides the obvious issues, it is a good cruiser.

I know i know, i should have had the work done a long time ago, but i work 60 hours a week, so sue me lol.
 
sounds like either bushings for the steering rack or the rack itself.

68,000 on a 96 LSC??? drooollll....save that car.:eek: :D
 
96 LSC with 96 Base bumper and non-HID headlights lol, minor front accident from last owner, too lazy to get the job done right so they slapped on a non-lsc front.

Anyway yeah it runs like a raped-ape.
 
Seriously i need to stop puusy-footing around and just spend $2K to fix everything, then swap some 4.30 gears in and a sound system to have a somewhat "new feeling car" lol.

I've been searching the sites for months and i cannot find a good buy on a Manual V-8 whether it be a Stang or Camaro or Firebird. I might aswell spend some dough on this Mark.
 
You could do the rack yourself but a 2nd set of hands does help a lot. I done the rack on my 94, with help, it took a couple of hours. It's not something I want to do again but it can be done in a driveway. Everything you need done can be done in the driveway. Save that cash.

I found a 96 LSC here in my town. Never wrecked and it's Cordavan with that tan interior. She wanted 3K for it but I got her down to $2500 right now. Has the HID housings and all. I have black interior ready for a Gen 1 but not decided on if I want it in the 96 LSC or the 95 because I don't like lite graphite or tan for an interior color.

Keep us posted on that 2" of play. It really does sound like the rack is shot. They ain't cheap either. See if you can find one close to you on http://www.car-part.com/
 
My money is on tie rod ends. I fried mine by driving around with shot front airbags a while back. Both L and R inners were fried.
 
I bet the warped rotors made toast of LCA bushings.
Jack it up, grab a tire, see what is loose.

Putting off stuff always winds up costing more in the long run.
 
That much play tells me the rack as well as tie rods.

I can help a little. I have a brand new 93 Rack (quicker ratio) in the box with new inner tie rods you can have for $150 shipped.

my guess is "all of it"....will be loose
Warped rotors will beat the piss out of your front end...
that little "shimmy" when it started was the bushings absorbing the vibes.

The vibrations didn't get worse the bushings did.
