Lincoln LS reliability

Like I said, aside from Town Cars which run forever pretty much problem free, the LS is like every other F/L/M product ever made, hence my comparison.

Your old car had to be a "Friday car".

So then your saying with the exception of the TC, most FLM proucts have their problems, i.e. arent that reliable? Go figure.

On a scale of most reliable (10) to least reliable (1) FLM in general I give a 6 and my LS I give a 4.

My car's been more than reliable. The stupid sh*t that goes doesn't bother me - I'm used to it already. lol

im happy other than my credit card bill but it could happen to anything i suppose. just my luck it was out of warrenty

Bought my '02 new and now have 120K on it. I started in the flathead years so I have a good view of cars over the years. I'm more satisfied with it than the Porsche I had a few years ago. Same for the (plural) Mercedes a few years back. Everything that's mechanical wears out. Maintenance makes a giant difference. I don't believe the iron or aluminum in a foreign car is superior to that from this country. I'd rather have my current '02 than anything else available. That's why I'm still driving it!

As far as reliability, it'd get an 8 imo. Most of the issues posted about on this board/experienced by the majority aren't issues that prevent the car from going anywhere. Coils seem to be the #1 issue, and that is a minor issue for this kind of car.

Still, I guess if I ran 87 in my LS I'd probably have a lot of things to bitch about.

You will see more complaints than compliments since problems push a person to post.

So...

I have a 2004 LSV8 I bought used as a Hertz sell off from Hawaii, so maybe more abuse than normal for miles, 14,000.

I had that common intermittant harsh shifting problem which I didn't really notice during the test drive.

Minor tranny rebuild under satisfaction program at about 15,000.

Replaced pinion seal, warranty.

Serviced rack and pinion steering under TSB.

Replaced seat back, warranty. Need another replaced, out of warranty.

Replaced grill, peeling chrome. Warranty.

Replaced coils due to all too common coil issues. Warranty.

Replaced Advance track face plate. Button pushed in and disappeared in console. Warranty.

Repaired Advance track intermittant. Warranty.

Replaced wheel bearing. Warranty. Probably need another. What is it with these wheel bearings???

Repaired head liner. warranty and some sticky tape.

Replaced brakes at about 30,000 and 40,000 miles. Awful short brake life.

I now have about 72,000 miles of daily commute type driving. I probably need another wheel bearing. The Antenna cable appears to have a short in it since when I bang the headliner or wiggle the antenna cable at the rear window, it pops and sputters. Driving it also comes in and out.

Sunroof rattles, even though I metioned it while under warranty. "No problem found". Still rattles.

I am an American car fan and usually sing the praises of them. I have had 5 Fords, 2 Chebbies, 1 Dodge, 2/1 Datsun/Nissans, a Pontiac. Of the 5 Fords, the last two, SHO and LS almost convince me not to buy another Ford. But, these two would be considered "exotic", ie non standard engine and drive trains, so I'll chalk it down to NEVER buy anything that does not have a normal high production drive train.

Just my opinion,

tranny slipping, cops going out

is the worse ive read about the LS's

This says it all there IMO :P Nothin personal, but I think buying any rental car is a bad idea. Nobody takes care of those cars like an individual owner would. The people who drive rentals beat on them and drive like jerkoffs (like tourists in sunny Hawaii). Gotta get them from single owner types, people who care because they plunked down 40k+ out of their own pocket.

People beat on rentals but at the same time they are probably the most well maintained cars on the road too.

And for some reason I doubt 87 had anything to do with the coils going out constantly or stupid noises coming from the radio or trans problems or electronic parking brake problems or rattles coming from nearly every corner of the car.

"Buying a rental car is like going to a whore house looking for a wife. Anything that's been driven that hard by that many people, you probably don't want to be putting your key in it."

Im putting that one on my wall, thats good, Thanks Pektel way to start a friday

Admittedly my LS was a rental but, I figured since it was a luxury class high rent model, and in Hawaii the drivers are tourists, that the wear and tear would be much less than some punks renting a cheap car.

In any case, most of the problems I had are very common to the LS, tranny, coils, Advancetrak, bearings, seats. And other items you just don't see failing so soon. I have never had a wheel bearing failure in maybe 1.5 million miles plus of driving, now I have 2 in less than 70,000??

I have always been an "Enthusiastic" driver and sometimes outright abusive, but other than the SHO and LS, I have never had so many problems with any of my cars at such low miles.

Just too many problems for what I thought was a premium car. Could just be rental abuse or bad luck, but the LS will be due to be dumped on my son when he goes to college in 2y, and then I will get something like a ... KIA V6. Rented one of those a couple months back, very nice. Nah probably a GM or maybe a Ford, but definitely mainstream driveline.

Oh well better luck for me on my next car.

Jim,

Everyone I know tears up rental cars. Wherever they get them and whatever they are. My brother-in-law did some great burn-outs in a huge cadillac he rented a few years back. It was quite impressive. I will never purchase a rental car. Buying a car from a stranger you have some possible risk. Buying from a rental company you can guarantee that the car has been abused at least a few times. Tranny and bearing problems are all signs of rough wear considering the mileage on that car. Coils and window regulators are the common problems caused by sub-par manufacturing.

Oh, and do you let your highschool aged son drive the LS now? I bet he's driven it faster than you have! :D

I don't mean to question your decision making. Just posting my 2 cents from my experience.

Please note my comments above. With that said, let me add that I have driven the car hard enough to have set four National Land Speed records with it. That means that I've run as much as a 150 nitrous oxide shot, accompanying the 'spray' with straight methanol as fuel. The suspension is original, less the fresh ceramic brake pads, and I'm on the third set of tires. I've done an inner door handle, and now need a clock spring and attention to the WS washer 'squirters'. I've also replaced the coils with Accel Mustang units and replaced the seals and plugs. I'm also on a replacement alternator.
I have no complaints.

Strangely, my 16+ yo Son doesn't have an interest in driving, he is a nerd. It's weird, when I was a kid, everyone who hit 15 1/2 was at the DMV for their permit. Many kids don't seem in such a rush anymore. Mine hasn't touched a steering wheel since he crashed the tractor 7 or 8 years ago. I'll use the LS on him when he does go to college since it is very highly rated safety wise.

I never abuse rentals and I have rented a lot. But I do have friends that are real jerks who do trash any car not their own. I more often will "abuse" my own cars, but nothing like reving up to redline and dropping into Drive.

Guess even a "premium" car will have a few jerks renting them. Still, seems like more problems than I would expect. And, that doesn't explain the SHO I bought new and sold when it cost me $2000/year in maintenance.

Not sure what I will do with son #2. He'll be 15 this year. He wants to be a fighter pilot. Yeah sure, he can use my Seca Turbo bike for commuting. My insurance agent is licking his chops.
