I did this mod about a month ago and really like it. I used a MAF adapter from Jeg's for $20, it was a very beautiful piece and even came with nylon lock nuts and bolts. I used a 10 inch Spectre filter from the Zone. The hardest part of the mod was removing the snorkel/silencer. Easy way to do it is to push the studs down out of the holes and use a large pry bar to pry back against the snorkel using the lip as a fulcrum.

I used a jig saw to make short work of the cutting of the air box. I think I cut a little too much out of the top of the air box. I think it will still keep out most of the under hood heat from getting to the filter because it gets tons of fresh cool air from behind the head light. It definitely sounds a lot meaner and seems to pull a little harder. Could be a placebo effect. I'll let the pics do the talking.

This is the MAF adapter held up in front of the MAF attached to the air horn inside the air box.

MAF and adapter ready to be installed into the intake tube. The Spectre filter comes with rubber rings to accomodate 3,3.5, and 4 inch filters.

The rear view of the airbox cutout. I think I got a little too excited with the jig saw.

omg does that look like crap, you shoulda used a dremel, i bought a similar peice that was plastic off of ebay for 3 dollars, your looks like a much nicer wuality however, but please save yourself and intsall some rubber trim around that

sorry to hurt your feelings but in my opinion it looks like crap...i apologize, now apologize to your car dammit!

LOL, just a bit. :)

On another note, I hope you used some sensor safe silicone on the MAF adaptor. They tend to separate a touch between the corner bolts. When they do you have unfiltered air entering.

Woo, tough crowd. I guess I thought it looked ok, but yall really opened my eyes and now I see the horror. I guess I'll look for an upper air box lid or make my own heat shield. Most likely the latter, I've got some good ideas.

You could just use a file and smooth the edges of the box so it doesn't look rough.

I am not worried about cops but IATs are a big concern for me. I have been wanting to block off some under hood air from mine and that idea seems pretty good. Here is my try at it:
