After getting tranny issues and vandalized, today my ball joints went (again) and i'm hearing light knocking at idle. Two separate occasions this week, the car had a really tough time maintaining an idle but went away after revving and restarting the car. Today while parking i noticed that there is a light tapping/knocking that seems to correspond with the rough idle. The knocking goes away when i increase rpm but returns at idle. Any probable causes as to what is going on here? Seems to have happened after switching down from Premium to regular gas. I've done it a few occasions before but never had any problems like this. Thanks team.

Unfortunately that might be timing chains.

Never run anything less than premium. You save maybe a total of $5 to a tank and decrease mpg as well as make the engine ping.

Not even a bad spark plug/coil could cause it to happen? Any idea on how much it'll cost to replace the chain?

Search the forums. Timing chains are a common issue with first gen. Replace it now or risk losing an engine and being out another couple grand.

Looks like another week in the shop. I'll get it looked at on friday since most places are closed for thanks giving tomorrow. Thanks. Are there any videos on the ls with this issue? I'd like to make sure it's the same symptoms I am experiencing before I go about replacing the chain.

Give me a sec I may still have some video links for the noise a failing tensioner makes.

Bad gas will cause knocking. Especially regular when the engine was designed to run premium. This has been discussed ad-nauseam!

I don't remember your year LS, but, IIRC, the chain tensioners were updated for the '02MY.

edit
I see in another post you have a V6. They didn't have the timing chain issues the V8 had/has. My daughter's '00 has over 178K miles and still runs great! We bought it new in 8/00.

You just lucked out op.

No need to worry about timing chains.

I'll see if i can get a video of it tomorrow. I'll have to look for my camera, hopefully those thieves didn't steal that too

Can you tell approx where it's coming from?

Mine is knocking at idle, mostly when it is in gear. Since crawling underneath to listen to it I've found it's coming the flex plate/ torque converter area.

So it could be cracked flex plate or bad torque converter.....and you said you were having tranny issues so it could be related to the issue or to whatever work you had done.

Oh and since this is my first post here I'd like to say hi and thanks to everybody here. I've been visiting this forum for a while now and have to say the information I've found has helped tremendously.

I'm hearing the noise mainly from the center of the engine near the cylinders. I just had my torque converter rebuilt along with every other part in the transmission replaced except for a shaft (i forgot the name of it) and the bell housing. Also, welcome to the forums!

Just parked up after coming home from two thanksgiving dinners and while parking I noticed that when the steering wheel is turned all the way, the car looses a lot of rpm and then kicks back up. There also now seems to be a humming sound that increases and decreases with engine speed and is audible at idle. The light knocking noises I was talking about earlier seems to have disappeared for this drive. Lots of vibration coming from the rear when above 40mph. This car is really turning out to be a real mystery.

Wonder if a bad power steering pump could be the issue.

Normal when the steering wheel is at full lock; which is why it is a bad thing to do. It stress' the pump. That "hum" may be low p/s fluid. The vibration could be a bad bearing (is there also an accompaning noise?) or a poorly balanced tire.

Power steering fluid level is normal. I also noticed that I am having harsh shifting again between D and R and P. Maybe most of these problems are arising due to a faulty rebuild?

Nah, I had a bad power steering pump in mine and it didn't "knock".

fudge, the trouble that you will go through because you want to save a few bucks and get regular gas will not be worth it in the long run. ALWAYS run premium in the LS. Do that and then see if it goes away. I highly doubt it has to do with coils or plugs.

Well I guess it's time I start treating her with the right gas. Hopefully its not too late for her to forgive me

What do you mean by harsh shifting? Delayed engagement? Abrupt engagement? Delayed would point to the solenoid pack.

When running regular the computer will retard timing to prevent pre-detonation, or "knock/pinging" resulting in poor performance and lower MPG. The money saved per tank is more than lost on the lower MPG.
