i was bidding on a alternator cover, and when it came down to the last minuet i noticed that every time that i refreshed the auction, it keept getting slower and slower, buy the time i got to push the button to confirm my bid the auction was over:mad:

i use firefox too and sometimes if the puter has been on all day and i go on ebay it will slow down over time also. so does the chat room on wed. in here, sometimes i have to shut down and restart then it flies!

Many bidders are now using sniping programs to bid for them at the last minute. This may be causing a lot of activity during the final minutes of bidding for popular items causing slow downs.

Upgrade..........

Maybe you need an upgrade from that Winblows 98 you're using!
Just kiddin' but I use Linux,Firefox and Thunderbird on a dual processor
homebrew box. MS Windows...hahahahah !!!!! Anyone wanna race?
I'll even let you update you're virus definitions and defrag first! Windoze! Uhhh!

the refresh thing on ebay was working fine until the last minuet and a half then ebay just slowed down to a crawl

I need to get into Linux, may have to do some research and install it on the gaming pc I'm throwing together, dual boot w/ vista ultimate.

Just like Jamie, either reboot....or what I do is reset the cable modem/router connections, thats faster.

i see words and yet they mean nothing

I know with Comcast they recommend you re-boot your modem once a month so it will update. On my modem there is a pinhole on the back, you push it for a couple of seconds, and it reboots. Usually much quicker for a while after that. Also on E-Bay many people use programs to automatically put a bid in, during the last couple seconds of the auction.

Well keep in mind it would not be eBay that is doing it, they want all the bids they can get.

I prefer to use a timer anyway, one on my phone. Then two windows open, one with the "confirm bid" ready to go and the other to watch it.

Something similar happened to me. But it was my fault. On my 1st Ebay purchase, for a Mark part, no one else bid. I got it for $1 more than the minimum. My 2nd time I was up against one other bidder for another Mark part. I counted down the days. With about 10 minutes left I upped my bid. I was doing something else on another website but kept looking at the clock. With one minute to go I realized the Ebay clock was for when I bid. It still showed 10 minutes. I upped my bid , hit enter but I was to late. Stupid plus. Subsequently I got the part, but it cost more from another seller. Rookie mistake.

Ebay just flat out sucks anymore! I don't even waste my time with it as it's not worth the frustration, the dead beat bidders or the bad sellers. I rely on craigslist for selling / buying things.

BTW, I tried firefox & will admit that it was faster loading most pages but the constant errors and the images looking strange or in the wrong places just wasn't worth it. I have tried all of the browsers & I prefer IE.

Too bad Ebay can't clean things up. I guess that when you get as big as they are you just don't give a crap! We all need to go back to a simpler time where people actually dealt with other people & not a computer. Just my thought.

I almost never have problems with eBay these days, back in 2000 or so when I registered I had problems with deadbeats and couldn't snipe (56k days.) I rarely sell anything there though.

I've learned that, even early on, throw in a BS bid to keep the auction alive and keep it listed in your "my ebay." Obviously you'll get outbid, but that is good because ebay will remind you (repeatedly) that you've been outbid.

hammersnipe.com it's free and it works.

I've yet to lose an auction that ended inside my price that I set.

I dont put a BS bid in early as that just artificially drives the prive up.
I add the auction to my watched list... and add it to hammersnipe and forget about it.

Works like a charm.

The slowing down of ebay is probably due to the snipe programs hitting the listing in the last few seconds.. Ive seen that happen more than once.

again.. hammersnipe.com and it's FREE.

obviously your idea of "FUN" and mine aren't the same.

My idea of fun is getting the part for the price that "I" decide without any of the "end of the auction" drama and hype that drives the price up.

You see people getting wrapped up in a particular item and paying almost as much as the new part would cost.

Example: HID bulbs, second gen cup holders ect.

I got my Xcal 2 off ebay for 50.00.. THAT is fun!
