No, I completely agree with you Joe that they can explode when being jumped. But afaik batteries only produce that quantity of gas during large current draws. Under regular operating conditions, being charged as it runs, the levels of gas would be very low.
And during a jump, the battery is open to the air, so the vent hose wouldn't be making a difference. That being said, I'd pay the extra for a vented. Safety specifications aren't usually for day-to-day life, they're for when something goes wrong. They wouldn't require venting if there wasn't a good reason, even if a problem is unlikely to occur.
I'd still be most concerned with corrosion within the electrical box. I don't know how well those are sealed, but given how computerized these cars are, poor connections can lead to all sorts of problems.
