So I drop my car off at the shop to have the rear end installed. Guy says it will be done today, great! I bribe a friend to take me to rent a car, I rent the car, get to work and wait. I just called them to make sure they were on track and the ass hole says he cant do it! Says it would take 2 days and its $1000. :mad: Screw him! He said $250 initially and then $300 which I agreed to. He made me late for work, I gotta leave early from work now and it cost me $55 in rental fees and bribing my friend.

Other place out here said $550 so its gonna be a long time before the gears get done. I am so pissed off. :mad:

LMFAO - I've never heard anything so ridiculous!

Damn - you might just as well read up on the procedure, get the tools and do it yourself.

Ask the other place if you pull the diff how much, and how fast he can do it.

Using the one wheel method is a snap, its what Brandon and I did.
Half an hour tops you will have the Diff in your hands.

Do you still have your green car Diff?
Bring that one in and get er done, then its a easy swap.
 
That sucks man. I should hopefully be getting mine done in a couple weeks. Mostly likely by Ford Nut's brother....and if he tries sticking me with a bigger bill I will be pm'ing the hell out of Ford Nut about it. :lol:
 
You were expecting them to pull the pumpkin, do a gear and carrier swap and set it all up, and reinstall it, and a different driveshaft for $250-300?

Did you at least ask them now how much if you bring just the pumpkin in to them?
 
Wow. Well, maybe you'll have nothing but good luck next year! Cause, you sure run into a lot of crap this year.

Holy chit dude! The whole drive home I was thinking I could pull the pumpkin this weekedn and rent a car for the whole week cause I wouldnt have time untill next weekend to reinstall it. I didnt even think about the damn green car! Yes, this weekend I will pull it and then drop it off and have someone do the work.

This is all new to me so I guess I just give them all the bearings and gears. Would I be installing the new axle seals or do I give them to the shop too?

OK, what am I gonna need to get the pumpkin out? I assume I have to have something to remove one side axle? Also how hard will it be for me by myself to install the pumpkin and all that? I mean is it a 4 hour job or am I gonna need all 10 hours of daylight?


Also Icarus I specifically told him "I want a gear swap and LSD install in a 1998 Mark VIII. It has the IRS. Also could you slap in the drive shaft?" he said "$250" I said that the tank needs to be dropped to install the DS. So he said "$300 and I need it most of the day." So thats what I went with. Now there are a couple shops in Waco that said $525-$550 but if I can have it done for under $200 if I bring them the pumpkin then that is just fine with me. I imagine I need to buy something to get the fluids into the diff after I glue the cover on too?
 
Part store should have what you need to fill it up. Basically just a pump with a line connected. Commonly used to fill transmissions and diffs.

Brandon used a cutoff wheel on a 4 1/2 hand grinder when I was doing something else.
I guess it went fast because we were doing it together.
I didn't think of that, it would take longer by yourself.
Brandon is a good wrench, I can thrash with the best of them.
So your right 1/2 hour is a reach at best.
 
Ah, if you told them all that, then they had no idea at all what they were getting into!
Taking the green car pumpkin in is a good idea, then you can take your time swapping them. Take everything diff related but the driveshaft and trans seal. Fill the pumpkin with fluid before you put it in and don't turn it much and you'll be fine. You can use a short piece of any hose laying around, or just use the pointed cap they usually come with if the pumpkin is out to fill ;)

i can swing that price an a saturday at a local ford dealer..but its kinda a pita to set up logisticly.

we did my car in 1.5 hours on a lift..

on the ground..you might take twice as long.

add a safety meeting or two and your up to 4-6 hours..for a first timer.

how much is your budget?
i might know a guy halfway between us.
 
wait.. you need the gears "set up" too huh?
jeff isnt set up..to set up the gears... but the pumkin install..likely no problem

That includes re & re of the pumpkin and driveshaft, the gear change and carrier swap and setting up the diff properly? How well do you know the owners of the dealer or are you family?

You can do it alone, take the one out of the green car first. You need the right tools I don't know them off the top of my head.

You can do it, You should think of putting in a new pump when the tank is droped.
A full day should give you plenty of time, is there a u-joint or drive shaft shop around?
I would get that 93 shaft balanced, new u-joints installed.
There is a fill hole, just stuff in the bottle and squeeze the chit out of it, just leave enough room for the modifyer.

nah well..unless you consider racing with/against them for 10-12 years family.

i consider them family, so..yeah i guess.

apparently they dont hold a grudge when they lose huh...haha
 
OK so I take off the brakes on one side and remove the axle nut and the UCA bolt then swing it down to pull the axle. With the driveshaft and the diff mounting bolts removed I should just be able to slide the pumpkin away from the other axle. I wasnt planning on dropping the tank because the exhaust is fully welded and I cannot remove it to drop the tank. I figured with the pumpkin out I can slide in the new 93 shaft. It has new U-joints already but balencing is a whole nother trip. NOPLACE in Waco or Corsicana will balence an aluminum shaft. There may be places in Dallas ( i am sure there is) but I just cant take the time to bring it up there to do it. I work 6 days a week.
I got it from Brandon but not sure if he knows of its balence condition.

So I just take the pumpkin, gears, LSD, bearings, crush sleeves, pinion nut and axle seals to the shop and then after they are done I get it home, apply the gasket maker, let it set, add the fluids, mount it up on the car and slide the axles in and bolt everything up?

Sounds easy enough.

The lower arm torx bolt with the big head is what needs to be cut so it clears the arm then wala...the whole mess comes out FTW

With the pussy gear your putting in the drive shaft should be ok, just make sure when you put in the u-joints you mark the shaft and put it together the same way.

I doubt you will be able to get the tank down far enough without pulling the ext.

Actually I was talking to Tommy. I spoke to him on the phone and it sounds like if I remove the axle nut instead of the LCA then it will tilt out and the shaft will drop. That will also avoid cutting that bolt right?

And if I am installing a new shaft then how will marking the way it was help with the new one? The u-joints are already installed by Kid.
 
More then one way to skin a cat.
Triming the bolt is no biggie but you car is from texas so I am sure the nut will come right off.
I was saying to mark the shaft if you were going to change the u-joints..keep it phased.

Doing the one axle method should work fine on the green car but since the white one has the exhaust and crap in the way I will prolly drop both sides to make it easier. Gotta make sure my socket is the right size too. Actually I am gonna go check right now. :D
 
Yup, 36mm and I have it. Just have to remember to get a new drain valve for my air tank. My seal went bad when it froze so I have no air tools right now. :(
