So I go to the movies last night in New Roc City for those of you that are familiar with Westchester NY, leave on my way home and I get a cop behind me with his lights going. I am like come on, WTF, figuring here goes another ball busting session for tint, he says the usual "license and registration", of course I ask what the problem is, he say "your exhaust is loud", sooo I am like no louder than these bikes that drive around, he says well they get tickets also, so he says he could hear me from 2 blocks away and the car shakes the ground. I was like you gotta be kidding, so when he comes back he ask for my SS #, I am like I don't give that :q:q:q:q out, esp. since my girlfriend was a victim of identity theft and he says if I don't give the SS then he would have to arrest me, so I give it to him, then I ask what is the decibal limit for exhaust, he says there is not that it is his judgement. WHat BS, and the ticket is like a disturbing the peace :q:q:q:q. SO I gotta go to court for this crap. Belive me if I was nailing the car in a residential area I could see him saying it is loud, but just being light on the car which is the way I was driving my car is not offensive to anyone, :q:q:q:q I leave for work at 6:30 AM and live in a quiet neighborhood and never has anyone said to me that my car is too loud. This is BS. And I understand tryng to get rid of the annoying fart can cars that the owners drive like :q:q:q:q:q:q:q.

So if anyone has any insight to how to beat this I would be glad to know, cause this is really BS.
 
Go get your car inspected at a state regulation facility (state owned) if it passes there I'd imagine it has to pass elsewhere.
 
hold up, they should never ask you for your SS#, that sounds real skeptical to me. i mean really skeptical. for someone who has been stopped so many times i have not once been asked for that, or anyone i know for that matter. report the fu***r!
 
Ya, no Police officer will ask you your soc. they dont need it and never will ask. this guy had a grudge and was writting tickets if he was a actuall cop. if any thing take it to court and fight it. the Soc deal will hopefully drop it and repeat everything as it happend. Remember, if you lie, they have got cameras and mics. They will know when the tape is reviewed.
 
Id call a lawyer and ask them about the laws concerning exhuast systems. And I'd call the state police and ask them if it is OK for the officer to force you to surrender your SS#. Doesn't matter if the officer that gave you the ticket was local or not, you get the state police involved, and they find out he did something he's not allowed to do, they'll can his ass.

Heres what I have gathered....

Section 375. Equipment.

Subsection 31. Mufflers and exhaust systems. Prevention of noise.

Every motor vehicle, operated or driven upon the highways of the state, shall at all times be equipped with an adequate muffler and exhaust system in constant operation and properly maintained to prevent any excessive or unusual noise and no such muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped with a cut-out, bypass, or similar device.

No person shall modify the muffler or exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor or exhaust system of such vehicle above that emitted by the muffler or exhaust system originally installed on the vehicle and such original muffler and exhaust system shall comply with all the requirements of this section.

A muffler is a device consisting of a series of chambers or baffle plates, or other mechanical design for the purpose of receiving exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine, and effective in reducing noise.

An exhaust system is a series of mechanical devices for the purpose of receiving exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine and expelling it into the atmosphere.


So he does have that right to make that decision but I feel no LS is that loud that they should have bothered you!
 
Dude, that's the same sh*t I got nailed for in my 87. Remember? Just get Kasey to write you up a work order for a new exhaust and if you're lucky like me, they'll throw the summons out before you even need to show it to them.

That sucks man. You can blame Bloomberg for that crap. :mad:
 
wow, im sure glad im 1733 miles from that crap. Out here, if its to loud then....... Its not too loud unless your bleeding. But you better have both plates visable and fixed, and your sex lights better not be seen when on. Glow is much cooler then direct bulb, Wrong boys up in NYC?
 
I see in your profile you did modify your exhaust.

You should try and communicate with out swearing it makes it easier to read with out all the editing.

Law enforcement can ask for further ID including soc if there are warrants. Of course you can get hard nose and get hauled off to jail and argue about it there.
 
o ya, about that cd I let you borrow Nick, well i called it in stolen and there was a warrant out for you in 4 states. Sorry didnt get you that Memo

This part is true, at least in Indiana. Officers use the SS# (usuallly only the last 4 digits now b/c of security reasons since so many people have scanners now) to confirm warrants, and I suppose if a person does not comply the officer could take the person to jail for obstruction of justice. Alot of states include part or the whole SS# on the drivers license infomation when they run you. As far as the exhaust issue the cop must have been having a bad day and you were there to take it out on. I'd say go with NYC's advise on the new work order.
 
I would contact the officers "shift commander" and tell him about the SS#. Explain to him it sounded fishy and that you were VERY uncomfortable giving it to him. And you don't understand why he had to have it. This way, his commander is aware of it. Incase there has been complains or weird behavior by the officer.

As for the muffler and exhaust systems, its federal DOT law. Factory systems are not to be altered or moddified. Rplace with same or similair equipement.

+1, some states wont have all the warrants come up if you have any just by ID number. Some states will only be able to run a more local type data base so it is up to the officer to further check on that if he feels necessary.
 
I did not get the ticket in NYC limits, it was in Westchester county, or NYstate, I dont know what difference the law may be here, I have to see. He did say with the SS # was in case I did not show in court they need it to issue the warrant. I forgot to mention I had my car on the whole time and when he came back with the ticket I told him it cant be that loud if I can hear him talking fine, he said "it's not loud idling, but is when driving. Of coarse I know it is lower, but being a person that has done a lot of exhaust on a lot of diff. vehicle know there is a correlation in loudness idle/driving, a louder exhaust at idle is louder driving. What I am getting at is if he could say it is not loud at idle, even though getsd louder driving in no way would it be soooo much louder to be offensive, right Tommy, how does Kasey's truck sound at idle/driving??? LOUD :)
 
I had the same happen to me in 1997 with a Turbo 240sx. I was pulled over and then the cop made me re-start my car and listened to my exhaust. I had a full cat back with a muffler so it was louder, but nothing close to the fart can stuff driving around now a days.

These guys need to get lives.
 
In Ohio it's optional to have the SS# on your drivers license. But that does not mean you don't have to give it up to a cop when they ask (you definitely have to give it to them).
