Just need some on the threads so it doesn't become permanently attached to the exhaust. It won't harm the sensor and will get burned off pretty quick.

Had a p0420 code show up, replaced the upstream sensor and code still came back, is the downstream normally the culprit regarding the LS? I'm really hoping to not have to replace the converter

Sensor or sensors? It could be the other one.
