help with fuel filter removal

ok, i did everything to the T with the right steps. im at the point where the top of the fuel filter is still in, and the bottom has easily come out - drained teh fuel into a bucket. (not much came out)

i got the tool - the one that looks like a dull scissors.

what do i do to get the top part of the fuel out, my book says to pull with a spinning direction. i dont want to break anything... the book doesnt even call for a special tool so im confused. please help!

this doesnt make any sense? so the tool scissors between filter and the line and you push and pool. does the tool go inside of the fuel line?
 
It makes perfect sense if you go out there and do what I wrote. The tool goes around the fuel line and then into the connector on the fuel filter. There is a spring inside the fuel filter connector that needs to be depressed by that disconnect tool. If the tool is cheap, it can be a PITA. I've had that problem and wound up using a small flat head screwdriver and worked it around the spring.

So...you push the disconnect tool into the fule filter side, while pulling the fuel line out. pretty simple, but on the VIII it can be a little bit of a PITA.

so the tool goes inside of fuel filter bell, im gonna snap a picture real quick if need be. im putting the tool around the top part of the fuel filter, and stuffing it inside the bell of the fuel line. im pulling down on the fuel filter and pushing up on the tool.
 
ok i got it off, inside my fuel line is four metal clips... i didnt see any plastic clip like my new fuel filter came with. i wonder if my car has the newer style fuel lines?

No, your plastic clip was probably broken in the past and went missing... mine didn't have one either. You will see a slot for one in the connector - they can be a pita to get back in.

the new filter length on the top part is shorter than the old filter? it doesnt want to budge at all inside the new fuel line - are you sure those 4 metal prongs dont have to come out?
 
at the end of the line, at the bell where it connects to the fuel filter, inside are four metal prongs/clip - the old filter i pulled out has a longer top thing comming out of the fuel filter than the old one. the new one has a green connector that will absolutly not fit intside the fuel line wit those metal prongs inside there. it wont budge at all....
 
You lost me lol. I was talking about the plastic retainer clip that comes with a new filter.

From what i can remember, you just push the new filter up into the line and the little prongs snap into place. So, push it in, give it a wiggle about and lastly a slight tug, to make sure the metal prongs have gripped it in place. If you have the correct filter, should be pretty easy.

Edit: just read your new post, maybe the filter you got is the wrong one? I did nothing more than what is shown in the article mespock put up. Don't force anything! If its wrong, take it back and bring your old filter with you for reference.
 
look at my pictures the top part is longer on my previous filter than this other one. no plastic clip was inside, rather theres four metal clips inside teh bell of my fuel line?????

the plastic clip i spoke of, is a retainer clip i think for the bottom line - you usually get one in the box with the new filter, i thought that was what you were refering to earlier. For the top, it really should be just a case of pushing the tube of the filter into the hose, until the metal prongs engage. If anything about your new filter is different to your old one, or different to those tech pics, then it might well be the wrong one for your car!

Edit: if the new filter has a strange connector on it, then it must be the wrong one. What make and part number is it? are you SURE its for a mark viii?
 
yea, i went to the parts store said i need a fuel filter for a 95 mark viii... its a fram. what i did was take the plastic two pronged green thing that came iwth the new filter (fram) off and installed it. Went right it fairly easy, heard the existing four metal prongs kinda snap - took it for a decent cruise, no leaks runs great!
 
look at the picture, theres a plastic clip for the top line, its green. i took that off and put it inside the top fuel tube, because it would not fit with the four prong metal tube thats inside the bell of the top fuel line. it works, but i dont even think my fuel filter was that dirty, i dont know how you guys tell... but it has been 50k so i did it. and it was a pita
 
it took me a long time to figure out but its pretty straight forward. but im not out of the woods yet... ?? have you replaced the fuel pump?
 
Hi....I searched for info but found none.....can anyone tell me the location of the inline fuel filter for my 1996 Mark VIII ? I've been crawling all over under the chassis and can't seem to locate it....thanks!
 
it's under the passenger front plastic shield for the wheels. You have to remove the big black shield.
