As I sat in my 98 Mark Viii I wanted to warm up so I hit what I thought was the vent button, but accidently hit the Max a/c. so I hit the vent right away and now no heat no matter what the temp says. I let the car sit all day and tried again, still no heat on any setting no matter what. I stopped by a service station(general one) and only one guy was there but he said they recently "reprogrammed" a climate control on a late model Taurus.
my question
1. did I blow a fuse?
2. did I blow the unit?the fan still works fine, all speeds
3. is this guy right and I can reprogram it from inside the car hitting the buttons in a certain sequence?
4. what if I unplugged the battery overnight(the mechanic says it won't help)

help!!! it gets cold here quickly and god , I would hate to have to go to a Lincoln dealer and get raped.

thanks guys, JOHN

wow, you really asked this question?

this has to be one of the most discussed 97-98 mark 8 problem on this message board.

*cough*
search blend door
*cough*

Depending on the mode of failure.. you may be able to manually move the grey arm inside the glove box and get heat to work.

It's very easy to break the grey arm so dont go moving it back and forth.. be careful
Mine moves less than a 1/2 inch to go from cold to hot.

open your glove box door, and release the clip that holds it in the dash and allow it to fold down into the floor

then look in the glove box door opening to the left side of the opening and you should see a small grey arm.. move it gently

if moving that grey arm manually doesnt make heat happen, then you have internal issues with the blend door arms or motor and you need to pull the dash to repair.

on my car, the grey arm will spring back into the cold position unless i have the fan speed set manually to HIGH

the fast moving air from the fan actually holds the blend door into the "heat position".

this probably sounds confusing but I hope it helps

thanks, I hope it works. If I could have heat by moving it and it DOESN'T spring back, at least I could have heat. I never heard of this til today, not sure why. Somebody is selling one and telling that there is a way to do it without removing the dash. BUT you have to buy their part to get the special instructions. scam??

God, first the :q:q:q:qing headlamps with no replacement, then this. Ford is evil.

thanks again,

JOHN

wish I lived close. I guess my plan is tomorrow I'll drop the glovebox and move the lever carefully and see if the temp changes. I guess until I fix it I can just rig it hot and use the blower to control it this winter. then the opposite in summer until I get the gets to rip the whole dash apart and attempt this or just sell it.

sucks

JOHN

You don't jave to remove the dash just get it pulled back a few inches. The instructions with pics are on the net and it is not hard to do. It took me 4 hours taking my time. Pros like jaime can do it in 90 minutes. I lived in Michigan for 4 years, this is something you do not want to put off until Summer.

when you do this..
make sure you have the fan speed on high, and listen to the sound of the air blowing thru the vents.

when you move that arm, you should hear the sound change..to a more muffled sound.
