help 98 mark viii

I need help my mark viii 75000 miles is in great shape till my son drove into a very large puddle stalling the car it started back up then started making noise sounds like a rod knocking but from under the car it seams to be in the bell housing I just cant see what kind of damage would have been done hitting a large puddle any imput would be great thanks azjim
 
Sucking water into the intake tube could lead to some serious noises. The car stalling would be a good indicator of that happening..I'd say do an oil change immediately. Chances are the rods are damaged, in which case you'd be best off dropping in another engine
 
there does not look like any water is in the oil. where is the intake tube located thanks
 
The beginning of the intake system is in the right front bumper
And I'm not thinking correctly, it'd be more likely that you cracked a piston ...pull the plugs and do a compression test, you can borrow a test kit from most parts stores as long as you leave a refundable deposit

In pretty much ANY case involving these cars, if you hurt that motor, replace it

NO you inhaled it into the combustion chamber then it get spit out when exhaust valve opens. The problem happens when the intake valve opens, water goes in(water cannot be compressed) piston comes up for compression stroke(all valves closed) and the water fills the area where only air should be. The water inturn does not let the piston reach top dead center, so the connecting rod bends.
 
so if I do a compression test should be able to tell ? thanks again for your help the bitch is its in tucson and Iam in phoenix so it will be a couple days. Ill be back for more Iam sure.

OP, I honestly wouldn't even bother doing a compression test. With the facts listed (drove into water, stalled engine, restarted without pulling the plugs, now it knocks), it's pretty obvious that it's time to pull the engine.

:iconcur: Also! Find another from a JY with warranty for around $600 or less and have it replaced. Tell the son to stay away from large bodies of water. I have seen this happen on here more than a few times and the engine was ruined every time.
 
My friend got a Mk8 engine that did this for free. He got one used piston and rod and replaced the bent one, but changing engine would be faster.
 
My old 93 used to throw an ABS code every time it rained...these cars just like to sit in the garage
 
I agree it is probably the engine but please first make sure something didn't get bent into the torque converter.

Well, I know it's the same block but to make it as simple as possible and not have to swap sensors and whatnot, just wasn't positive about the 96 being a simple drop in and plug&play.

It's not plug&play since the '96 still had the coil packs and plug wires. Intake would have to be switched out. It would have to be converted to COP's, etc. A good '97 or '98 long block would be a much easier drop in swap than anything '96 or older, in my opinion.

Yes, that's what I really meant. That's why I said 97-98 would be for sure. :p
