Grooved Cylinder Heads

Under an hour? WOW! That's impressive. How the hell did you get the water pump out/in? We had to borrow a special tool that attaches to a ratchet, that fits into the grooves around the water pump, so you can screw it out/in (yes, its another retarded GM design, but that's how it works). So I'm wondering, how did you do it if you didn't have this tool?:shifty:

Dude, it'd Ed Hall. He had the tool in the glovebox.........

Betting two things....

One.... Less weight.

Two.... More final gear.

Because it sure as hell didn't have more torque (275lbft) then a Mark VIII 4.6 (285lbft).

front wheel drive? must be an eldorado?
3605 lbs vs 3757 lbs.
3.31 vs 3.07 final drive.
2.921 vs 2.84 first gear.
so, the cadillac had less weight, a lower 1st gear, a lower final drive, and a much worse, less powerful engine.

That's true but the torque came in at a much lower rpm. In fact, 3500 rpm was as fast as the engine wanted to spin up. With my style of driving, the engine felt a lot more responsive than the engine in my Mark.

I think you're confusing it with the Northstar engine. The Northstar engine did use a special big round tool with 4 or 5 teeth that you're talking about. Sometimes, the water pump would be seized so badly that it would take a large air ratchet to do the job.

To replace the water pump on the 4.9 engine, you just need some sockets and some torx bits to do the job. As long as the bolt with the torx head wasn't all seized up, it was a fairly straight forward job that could be done in the parking lot.

Yup, I always carried a spare lifetime warranty water pump along in the truck. Luckily, I could change out the water pump in the parking lot and be back on the road in less than an hour.

In my post prior to this reply, I was talking about the 4.6 Northstar, so therefore I thought you as well were referencing this engine.

Hmm, I think everyone should take note of this momentous occasion! The above stated information provided by Ed Hall, is true and correct.
