alright so i have the kkm intake on my 03 v8 i did this with a 3 inch aluminum dryer vent, duct tape, and zip ties. it held up but i havent tested it on the highway. i assume its working well but if it rains or there is debris will that channel it straight up to intake will it harm it all?? if a rock gets in there will it just tear the intake apart. also its pretty cheap aluminum this probably sounds dumb but can it rust? all the parts cost like $15

i ask because i havent seen anyone address this specifically

and on a second note i dont know who has tried clay barring their cars but it works great, and i did it on my windows too using windex as the lubricant and they are absolutely spotlessly clear. it also acts to some degree as a rain-x and the water beads up pretty well. i reccomend to do this you wont be disappointed.
 
Ok, I would trust the filter vefore the dryer vent tubeing, I just messed with that stuff lastnight cause mine was clogged and I wound up haveing to get new stuff. Dont trust it there is products out there that are just as cheap, and I realy mean it but they are ment for this kinda thing. Everytime I go into AutoZone I see that spectere stuff for intakes and wonder but then I remember its only cheap stuff. Rocks shouldnyt harm it unless its realy cheap filter.

After I lowerd my car it sank about another 1/4" and I had no choice but to remove the inner fender plastic protectors things. with the filter I have I never get any water or dirt up into it at all, maybe try it out. Also something I have been thinking on picking up is one of thos AEM water filter things, they are supposed to suck up any water and all kinds of stuff before it gets to the throtle body.

Um is it ok to clay the window I would imagine it would leave residue behind that might get anoying like wax sometimes do.

and no, no residue from the claying the windows, just use the windex and wipe the extra suds clean with a cloth after. i did it inside and outside. i expected there to be so i went horizontal with the clay on the outside and vertical on the inside, but during the night and day absolutley no haze, crystal clear windshield and windows

I thought you extended from the MAF through the fender and placed the filter behind the grille sorry. It was just posted.


But no you wont damage the filter, youll damage the tube for sure but not the filter, and I had read that even if the water is up to your bumper with it like that it wont pull in water. It will pull air from under the hood. I seen the thread on this site.
 
Hey glanga,
that "setup" that you have is the typical way of venting into the filter cabin. That's what I've done. That's basically the only way you'll get air to be forced up in there, unless you put the filter down where you put the tubing.

You would have to emerse the entire intake tube in water to even come remotely close to hydrolocking the engine. You're safe. If you run through puddles, depending on the configuration of your tubing, a minute amount of water might get into the filter cabin area.

Now all you have to do it put a heat shield cutting off the filter area from the engine and you're set.
 
I had a March Ram air set-up on my '87 LSC that came with a bumper-mounted scoop, air filter box and filter. I can't tell you how much crap that thing sucked up. It was like a rolling vacuum cleaner. Sticks, sand, pebbles, water, etc. - and the car was a weekend/track car. I personally would find a way to put some sort of a screen over the hole in the frame to prevent all types of debris from being strewn under the hood. Other than that, looks good!
 
Youll be fine. just dont aim for large puddles and youll probably have to clean the filter a little more often..Also how long did it take you to clay your car?
 
yeah i thought about that but what sort of thing?? i think its a waste to buy a whole thing of grille mesh or chicken fence just to cover one little hole, and if a rock hits screen door material at highway speeds itll shred it. i saw mesh that covers an actual barbecuegrille but it looked real heavy duty just for a small 3 inch hole. any ideas?? something flexiblei can bend then duct tape over it? or what if i just put a piece of mesh behind the lower grille on the car just in that corner, not over the actual mouth of the tube?
 
Yes - cover it with screen.

Think about someone throwing out a lit cigarette and you sucking it up into your engine bay.....
 
yeah but what im asking it what material screen to use? chicken wire seems too flimsy, and screen door screen will tear. i know there are sheets made for cars i used one on my upper grille but took it off, i just hate bright flashy chrome, id have an all black car if possible. i dont like the attention.
 
yeah i gotcha, thats what i was thinking but will that really stop a cigarette or rock from getting up there?i mean i know every little bit helps

Here is a link to the setup i did on my old V6 LS. I used the mesh from the back of an old air filter. I got kinda creative but all in all i dont think it added or helped that much. Mine was a completely airtight setup, if you put your hand in front of the tube underneath you could feel the suction. About the only kind of debris was lots of sand and dirt which i suspect would dirty up your filter alot quicker than if you didnt have a tube hooked up. Thought i'd share.

Another note on the factory setup. Awhile back i had the hood up doing some work and noticed how the grill and engine compartment was engineered. You can follow the design and how it actually takes the airflow thru the grill and channels it thru the sides. If you look at the insulation on the hood and how it seals when its closed you can get an idea of how the air flows. And honestly, i know everyone has stuck their hand out the window while driving, that amount of force blowing thru the grill and engine compartment provides plenty of fresh air for the engine.

Im wonderig how I missed that big@$$ hole when I had my intake box out a few days ago... This car is a dog when it gets hot under the hood, I had planned to just insulate my intake tube, but now I think ill run some extra piping as well and try to get some cold air from down behind the bumper too. I wanted to do a ram-air type setup like Mercedes uses but the hood closes right against the radiator support and its too close for it to work.
That mesh looks awesome behind that stock lower grille! Im gonna have to do that on mine. I dont like having my AC condenser open to whatever the road manages to throw at it. Its already got several big dents in the fins from rocks. One good hit at just the right speed and the AC would be no more.

Claybar does not leave residue unless you dont use enough cleaner to keep it lubricated.
 
I would cut the bumper grille out and paint the mesh black, it gives the eye to much noise to look at if you ask me.Thats just my opinion.
