Got new 4.10 Gears and New Traction-Lok - How hard/much to install

I purchased the 4.10 ring and pinion (richmond gears) I also have a new ford racing traction lok limited slip differential. I would like to install these items myself or with a friend or two who are mechanics. How much would it be to have a rear end shop install them? I called a transmission place and they quoted me 400 bucks for the install. sound about right?? I tried searching for an install right up and wasn't successful.
 
I paid $250 to get mine assembled recently that was with installing all the new bearings and seals also. I supplied the rebuilt kit.
 
If you can work on your car it will save you alot.If you want to do it kind of cheap way here it is,remove your pumpkin and take out your stock ring and pinion.Take an empty pumpkin with your new ring and pinion to the shop so they can install your ring and pinion and set the right gear backlash in your pumpkin than put it back on the car.

does the trac - lok go into the pumpkin as well

also do I need to get the rebuild kit to install these items
The traction lok came with what looks to two ring metal gaskets of some sorts.

how much does it cost to do this that way usually.... 400 seemed pretty steep, but if that includes his version of a rebuilt kit and all i have to do is drop the car off it might seem fair, but i would like to get my hands dirty on this one because taking out the pumpkin does not seem like its that big of a deal, however installing the gears is out of my league.

there's a small nick on my part of my ring and pinion... im guessing thats the pinon part. The seller on ebay said it was "new" in an opened box. I might be just paranoid over nothing but better safe than sorry right....?? What do you guys make of this? Im assuming that this can be installed no worries. It's richmond 4.10 Gears,

i didn't think it would be a problem, and from what i got from responses it won't be, but its better safe than sorry. gather from the parts i got, the cheapest way to install this is to get the rebuild kit (do i absolutly need this?) and remove the diff, take out the old gears, and take the new gears the pumpkin and the limited slip to a tranny shop? 250 for install i can live with (including rebuild kit) but if i can do it cheaper than that would be great.

Is this trac lock absolutely necessary? Why can't I just put in the gears and be done with it? I don't plan on racing, so I dont care that both rear wheels grip together. I just want the gears.
 
I'd imagine 4.10's and no track lock would make a Mark almost undrivable with more than a 1.2 throttle romp.
 
I think the bigger question would be, why pay for the diff tear down and rebuild/adjust... which will run you between $300-$500 (depending on local, additional parts required and options) plus the cost of the R&P set... when for another $200 you can have a brand new trakloc installed as well, and for no extra labor charge. If you ask me, that's like building a house without a bathroom... sure, you can do it if you want... but why the fock would you?!?!
 
My friend at my job is a top mechanic and has a 88 Mustang with 4.10 gears and an open rear end. He runs 13's in that thing with no posi. He asked me if I am stomping the :q:q:q:q out of my Mark every time I am in it. That I don't do. So it shouldn't be a problem.
 
All Mustangs, 1982-1993 FOX BODY (if a 302 V-8) GT or LX came with limited slip from the factory. This includes the 7.5" & the 8.8" rear ends. Are you sure your friends Stang only has a one tire fire? If that's the case then either his internals were switched at some point or his clutches are worn out.

Whatever the case is, I think you would regret it if you installed new gears without the limited slip (trac loc) You will always have one bald tire!:p
 
I don't understand, why 4.10's? And then no trac lock? I thought the whole point of the 4.10's was to make it go? It's like a super charger with no boost. Is it just so you can say it has 4.10 gears?

You put 4.10's in it and your out gas mileage.
You put a open rear end in it and your out your traction.

I'm confused:confused: :confused:

I was goin to change out my rear End to posi with 3.73 gears, has anyone did that mod yet, and how has you gas mileage after that? and will it effect the take off?
 
factory ratio is either 3.08:1 or 3.27:1 if you have an LSC; the difference will be more pronounced if you have the 3.08's. But either way, you WILL see a difference. Mileage (actually, not what you're seeing on your unadjusted speedo) will suffer a touch I'd imagine running 3.73's... But I doubt it will be anything noteworthy.

If you've never done it yourself and don't have someone experianced to help you... have a professional do it. It is FAR too easy to destroy your R&B. (and by default, your bearings and spider gears)
 
With 4.10's in, what would the RPM's be at when I am cruising at 80-85 mph? And If I want to go faster on the open road, what would I be looking at?

81 mph at 3000 rpms w/ 26.1" diameter tires.
