Got me a new 93' w/23,000mi

Just got ahold of a 1993 base mark viii. Has sat in the garage unmoved for at least 6 years and has, oooh yeah:D , 23,000 orig. miles. Was sitting on the floor so last week a put a battery in it and let the bags air up, turned the switch off, came back today and she's still up I was happy to see. On to the next step, I want to fire it up but want to crank it awhile to get the oil circulating. Can I just disconnect the plug wires from the coils and crank it? I just want to be sure cause i don't want to screw anything up. Before I do that i'm gonna syphon any fuel out and give it some fresh stuff also. Any other suggestions besides going straight to the dealership and getting all of the recalls done?

I suggest you spray the air bags with some silicone spray to maybe soften them a bit. They may also be dry rotted a bit so keep an eye on em!
 
If you want to crank the engine via the starter without it 'firing up' you can use the 'WOT trick' (keep pedal held to floor, then crank engine, switch off, take foot off pedal, then restart - will fire up as normal) - If for some odd reason the car does fire (electrical systems that have been sitting can be temperamental) switch off immediately and try your wire disconnect method.

Only other suggestion i can think of at the moment is to change all fluids and filters and inspect the various suspension rubbers and BJs for deterioration - the usual stuff really.

I guess you know about the cruise control recall already - get that done and check that they have really done it - its a bugger on the 93 because the switch is under the brake booster and is hard to access.

Im sure others will chime in with other stuff! (edit: as Unity already has! Lol)

I'd been trying to buy this car from my grandmother for over a year, she doesn't drive anymore and I need a new vehicle. She finally just said If I wanted to put it back on the road to just take it! She wouldn't take any money but i'm now her 24/7 on call home maintanence man...NO PROBLEM!
What kind of spray would you suggest? Oh it's Black leather and i believe the paint is Black Cherry...will post some pics in the near future when i get her runnin and dusted off.

Thanks alot! I've been on here almost a year and since I found this site i've been obsessed with getting my hands on the car. I had a few VII's but looks like i'm an VIII lover now;)
 
Ok.... I hate you! LOL

Just go to hardware store and look for a silicone spray. Its all over.
 
Once you are done with the general stuff, get the transmission sorted - mercon V fluid, new filter, 1-2 accumulator piston upgraded etc. - be good to catch these things while the trans is still good. (you could go a little further and do the J mod and fit a tranny cooler too) - all in good time - don't want to overwhelm you with stuff! Lol.

I hope to find a shop that'll do the j-mod and upgrades very soon. I want to change the fluid asap and i'd rather not buy the fluid twice.
 
sounds like the color is dark cranberry. you say it looks like black cherry, thats what i said the 93 i repainted for a friend looks like. does the color look like this one? this is dark cranberry 93 only color. welcome to LVC.

It's real close. That looks a little darker but I can't be sure as there's no lights in the garage and it's dusty. I have to get it out in the sun and washed then i'll get some pics up. I hope it looks like that. Good job!
 
Take a look at the sticker on the driver's door jamb. According to LOD tech, ext color code EX = cranberry.

Edit. Ok ya got it. :-)
 
Edit: I can't believe I drove that for 6 months! I just threw up in my mouth
 
the one with primer above is the same color as the one i pictured, remember you pic was 93 paint, the one i pictured is the factory color but 3 week old paint. over time it will darken. the wing is off a mark VIII that way back in the day ford sent out to have them body kits and wings done, they didnt do it to many mark's, but no its not an lms wing, but one of the originals i call factory, they werent factory, but you know what i mean. ford had it put on.

Got this baby on the road today, Man does she run! Tryin to take it easy until I get the trans upgraded but it gave me one hell of a chirp on a 1 to 2 manual shift about 5000rpm. I was takin it easy and she put a smile on my face, can't wait to get the trans upgrades and a posi!!

That may, well most likely is, a broken 1-2 accumulator as blue mentioned. Thats not saying the Mark can not chirp that 1st to 2nd shift, but a broken spring makes it easier for it to do it!
