I got one from a gen II in the you pull it place for parts for mine (I have a graphite interior, but the ashtray door is broken, the push to open part is missing, and the button to open it is not in good shape).
I found change stuck to a ton of spilled soda, bobby pins, and a bunch of other junk. I could tell something was blocking it from closing all the way, because there was a little spring metal piece hanging out the console.
I am not sure if these will help or not, might give you an idea about what to expect. It is rounded, and the cup holder part goes into it and has to be pretty flush for the latch to engage. You can see where something got in the way of the prong that fits through the holes, and it was forced so hard it broke the plastic out (and it is pretty sturdy stuff right there).
pad removed, and the arms to hold cups are broken off:
Partially closed, showing the latch on the left/moving cup holder part, and were it latches to in the base to the right:
Fully opened, bottom view. Those two prongs (below the springs used to extend the arms for holding cans) on the bottom go through holes in the base when it is closed:
Still fully opened, upside down showing the prongs on the cup holder/moving part:
Partially (1/4) closed, you can see where it pivots and travels to close:
Partially (1/2) closed, you can see the tracks the the prongs follow:
Fully closed, the prongs stick out, you can see the left hole is broken from something forced through it:
Top, fully closed, you can see it is latched:
What the latch and lever looks like under the arm pad:
broken hole in the bottom, likely something caused it to not close, and it got forced closed:
You can see that a nickel or quarter would likely cause it to not close far enough to latch. You can also see other cracks between the holes from forcing it closed:
