Gen 2 Cup Holder weak point?

I have a good working cupholder in my '97. While I have the
center console and armrest out of the car for shifter repairs, I want
to take this opportunity to reinforce the area of the cupholder where it
is a common breaking point before it breaks on me.

I've heard about peeps having nightmares with the cupholders but
I personally have not experienced or have seen where the breaking point is.

Car anyone tell me or show pics of where the problem occurs?
 
I've had my car for 6 years and haven't managed to break it. The original owner managed to snap off the passengers cup holder though.

They break at the thinnest part of the arm that swings out. I'm guessing people set their drink onto the arm itself and it snaps.
 
I don't use mine except for when I drink coffee in it, which is very rarely. The last thing I want to do is spend a hundred or two on a f'n cuholder, not to mention the pita it is to replace.
 
my drink sits firmly between my legs, I like to drive with my right hand on or near the shifter

I guess I never really use it.

lol, I usually wedge my drink of choice (usually water) between the belt latch and back part of the seat. I'm 6'3" 220lbs so it's plenty snug.
 
I don't have time today, but I'll try and list out the major problems with them and common failure points tomorrow. I've got about 10 cupholder assemblies in various states and conditions. I'll take pictures and stuff too.
 
Those things were designed in an age when a large drink was what we call a small today. And even when holding a "small" drink today, I've had the drink flip right out of the stupid holder while making a turn because the arms are so flimsy. They're useless.

Yep. The d/s is good on mine and the p/s is broken. But I don't use them. When my wife was driving the car, she sat a vinti Starbuck's coffee in there and as soon as she took off, the cup promptly flipped straight into the back floorboard. That was a waste of $8 bucks and a PITA to get all that frakkin' coffee outta the carpet.

Gawd I hate when that happens.
 
My driver's side arm has a broken spring. It just flops back and forth. I don't use it any way. I hate when the cup flips over backwards when I pull out from a light. I have one of those Walmart cup holders that wedge between the seat and console. It works great. I added some foam from a can coozie to the inside to hold the big cups event tighter.

You drink coffee out of your cupholder?? What a weirdo, i usually drink it out of a cup. Lol.
 
Ive had my mark for almost 4 years...my cupholder is still good. Cars 14 years old *shrug* :confused:
 
Yea, they are weak. Brother broke the passenger side. Later that week I was drunk and decided it would look better with both of them broke off.
