Gen 1 VSS

Really? I still have my entire dash out. I'm thinking I can access it from the behind the speedometer connector. I just don't know which wire.

Don't quote me on that wire color lol. Not positive on it. Something tells me it might be gray/black. Look through the wires for the cruise control and see if there is a wire that color in there while you have the dash out.

Greg, sorry about that. I'm getting n/a on that wire color and or location for all Mark VIII's. I'm sure it's there but I have searched and searched and can't find it. Maybe KD will come through on that one but I'll keep looking. I'm bored anyway lol.

Car Key Sense Wire (-): N/A
Car Key Sense Wire Location: N/A
Car Neutral Safety Wire (-): N/A

Car Tachometer Wire (-): Tan/Yellow
Car Tachometer Wire Location: At Ignition Coil
Car Speed Sense Wire: N/A

You know, this is the second time that the answer to my own question was provided by ME. I knew I did this before, about three years ago, and I provided the answer to k9t8m. Thanks KD. :D And NoLimit, you are correct. It is gray/black. It can be accessed behind the speedo as well.

I was guessing from what I had seen a while back.

KD was searching what he knew he had seen here.

You turned out to be the founder :p "CLICKY"

Next time you have a question, search "clicky" and maybe you already answered it.

VSS Wire Corrected

I need to clarify this thread. Back in 2008 when I first attemped to give k9t8m the answer to his D3 install. I originally directed him to a link to the12volt.com. They had VSS for the Continental and not for the Mark VIII. The wires are not the same. While putting my dash back together, I looked up the wire connector for the instrument cluster. The VSS wire thay you need to tap into is the DG/W (Dark Green with white stripe).

So it's not black/grey?

No it's not. See the diagram below.

Yeah I thought you answered this before Greg. Now I am pretty sure the gen 1&2 wires are different. I can go outside and look at my car to tell ya what color mine is hooked to if you want? I know my deck is getting the right trigger.

I would love to know this and which location you hit it at (I have a 98 Mark VIII); I've been googling/searching through this forum to no avail for a while now.
Would love to get my AVIC-D3 installed and this is the only hurdle I'm facing now. Thanks!

When you are using Pioneer navigation units, you don't need to hook up the VSS wire. The GPS antenna is real responsive and stays connected to the to the satellites. On the new Z110BT, and the F and X series Pioneer nav units, there's no VSS connection in the wire harness. So rest assure, you don't need it for a D3. The reason I am using the VSS on my install, is because I am installing a JVC KD-NX5000 nav unit, and I am unaware of how the VSS works on JVC's, so I am going to hook mine up to be safe.

I had issues with this particular unit in my last car (Cadillac Eldorado) not having the VSS hooked up.

Map position in rural WI wouldn't keep me on the highway. Hooked VSS up, haven't had similar issues since.

Bought the Mark VIII a week or two ago and the dash kit I'm using doesn't come out easily (Metra 95-5817), so I want to "set it and forget it" hopefully ;)

Just to let you know, Mark VIII's are going to need some trimming in order to get a D3 installed. There's no way around it. I suggest you buy a Pioneer ADT-VA133 Double Din Cage.

The info in the post I made in that link was for a 2nd gen car like the op of that thread had...
