Which Gears do you have???? Prefer? Why???

Looking for input so I'll take a poll and see what gears you are all running..
Thanks for the input..

Also if you have an opinion on why you run the gears you chose, then please post it. I'm looking for REAL WORLD experiance and not just what you have been told.

3:08 because I'm not out here trying to do any racing, unless they ask for it. If I do catch one at the right time at the right red light, I still usually beat it anyway.

Once you get gears, it can become an addiction and then you have to have something else and then something else ect.

Well...
I'm already on that road. I have a chip coming for it and now I'm wanting to make suttle changes that wont screw with the chip like small gear change and the J-Mod.

Please don't get me wrong, I'm all for anyone that wants to continue adding different mods to their Marks. I was really speaking for myself. I know if I added gears, I would break the bank as I moved my way up to the engine. Once I start getting into something like this, I become addicted. Right now all I want is a nice exhaust setup with one X-pipe and 2 good mufflers and to install the 98 trans I have. I would also like for the trans to have the J-Mod and that's all i want. Nice new black paint job too of course!
 
i'd say it depends....bottom end we do need more gears, but depending on the amount of highway driving you do.....i think i want like 3.73's
 
Depends on what YOU want.

I run 4.30's in my Cougar, gets terrible gas milage per mile driven, but doesn't accumulate many miles.

Stock (3.08's?) in the Mark, and it'll stay that way, the wife puts on about 300 miles/week - I'll keep my 20+mpg.

Most people compromise and install 3.73's based on their ability to still get somewhat decent milage, but wake up the car enough to have some fun.
 
I've got a fresh t-lock and 3.73s in a pumpkin just waiting to be swapped... :)
 
I like my 3.07 Gears because of this...........







At times I wish I was running 4.10's, but I drive the car back to Illinois quite frequently, and enjoy the 27+ MPG it returns.

3.73's not sure if its worth the $$$. I have nothing bad to say, fine on the highway and better than 3.27 on take offs. A very slight performance mod.
 
I wouldn't bother with anything less than 4.10s and plan on going to 4.30s or 4.56s down the road. It really depends of what kind of driving you do and what you want out of the car. My Mark was my daily driver with 4.10s(the LS is now) and while my commute is 10-15 without any freeways cruising at 3000rpm at 80-85 doesn't bother me.

Seems to me though that for those who did a gear change more people complain about 3.73s not being enough gear then 4.10s being to much.
 
I have seen many people like the 4:10's
If you have a DD on mixed Highway and Street would the 3:73's be a good compromise and still provide good mileage?

Yes.

People like the 4.10's+ because (and I know I'm going to get flak for this), they are typical red blooded Americans. They want get up and go. They don't care about top end as much.


More... sophisticated people like going fast. :p

And for the record, I'm not sophisticated.

I've seen your TerminVIIItor!!! When I had the 92 up in the NE Philly area.. Nice car then but really 4:10's? you dont think its too tall of a gear with highway? Also I dont want to rip the trans out just yet for a stall converter yet.
 
I've done 26mpg still... with 3.73s... at 85+mph.

My real world fuel economy went down about .5-1mpg since I went from 3.27 (my LSC) to 3.73. Sometimes I wish I did 4.10s, but I had thought I would take a bigger dip in fuel economy than I in fact did.

Do yourself a favor... get that thing tuned on a dyno after you're done. It's money well spent.

What was the RPM range when your cruising @ 85-90?
Was it in the 3K or lower range?
For me @ 85-90 I get around 2300-2500 range...

Close to three grand, IIRC. I never pay very close attention.

For your base model car with a 3.08, to test the RPMs at a given speed with 3.73s, drop it out of overdrive. It's a pretty damn close comparison.

My real world economy is about 20.5mpg combined everything. That includes highway, city, traffic, and, um, motorsports (and even some offroading).

4.10s are good for around 150mph in 3rd. How fast do you really need to go in a street car?

I can cruise at 80-85 doing 3000rpm and get over 20mpg all day long. Well except for NY traffic. And a high stall converter makes no difference during highway cruise. TC should be locked so you will be turning the same rpm as the stock converter.

that is the test to see if 410 compared to 308's.. not 373's to 308's.

If you have an lsc with 327's the same test will show you if 430's are OK or not.

a 308 car in 3rd is running the same RPM as a car with 410's in OD at the same MPH.
same goes for LSC....
a 430 geared car in 4th gear is the same RPM as a 327 car in 3rd gear at the same MPH.
