I am thinking of getting a Manual Rack & Pinion for my Mark VIII.

Pro:
1. No more leaking power steering.I am on my second PS pump and its leaking.
2. Free up 5-10 hp.
3. Less heat in the engine bay.
4. Quick steering ratio.

Cons:
1. Hard to turn at a dead stop.

My Mark VIII is not a daily driver. It is just a fun car.

It'll be good for him!

Pumpin iron every time he drives!

I've driven a few manual steering cars... it isn't that bad.

do it, i drive my mustang with no power steering and it still has the power rack in it and its not that hard to drive. i just choose not to parallel park because at a stop it's kind of a bitch. but with a manual rack its not as hard to turn because the ratio is usually different. if they have the option of a quick ratio manual rack, i'd go for that. but either way get rid of it...fords always leak fluid from somewhere, if no fluid, then no leak.

With the weight that's on the front end and the size tires we have in stock form, having a suicide knob with a six foot pipe handle could be an option. for close quarters steering.

do it its fun to know what i can get away with and not use my car for the guinea pig

The Manual Rack & Pinion for the Thunderbird is $225 and a quick power ratio (1:12) is $360.

I think I am going with power rack & pinion.

Hey Glen, order the flaming river steering joint to go with your new power rack.
that'll make the steering feel alot better

I am going to get a new steering joint but not from flaming river.
Flaming River does not make a steering joint for are cars.

Lame... I'd rock a manual rack!
and it'd ROCK your steering wheel, and kill the leather.

I did it on my SVO, and the additional force required to turn the wheel DESTROYED the leather on my steering wheel.

but since you have the wood inserts on yours.. GET A MANUAL RACK
BE THE FIRST ON YOUR BLOCK!

it's easy to volunteer someone "else" to be the guniea pig.

It not from a Thunderbird but a Mustang.
Sorry.
