I've done that several times.. with no ill effects

it's simple, go to lowes and grab one off the shelf and stick a bobby pin in it.

Meh...no bigge.

READ the owners manual, it expressly says "DO NOT FILL" after the pump automatically shuts off!

now it doesnt go into fine detail to spoonfeed you WHY you dont do it.

but.. if Lincoln put it in the owners manual, that my friend falls under the category of "COMMON KNOWLEDGE"...

If I stopped filling it after the first shut off then my car would never have over 3/4 of a tank of gas. We have those boot things over the nozzels and they suck.

Now, would you mind pointing a stupid n00b passing on bad info where in the owners manual it says not to top off the tank? I have my manual sitting here but the big words like "fuel" and "the" are confusing my little brain and cant seem to find that warning. I would really appreciate it. :)
I need to use spoons to be fed cause sometimes I stab people when I have a fork. :D

I dont know. It seems to me that if that tray under the spare tire well holds evap parts that if the tray were rusty and moved that it could break the plastic evap parts and cause fuel smells because something cracked or came loose. I dont know this to be true and was just an assumption on my part.

As I have said in many many threads, I still learn allot on these cars every day but what I do learn on here I go to confirm in real life to make sure its accurate. I do all my own work and am quite mechanically inclined so I can usually look at anything and figure out how it works and how to take it apart and put it back together.


In this thread I did not offer any advice, I just said what my personel experience was and a curiosity as to why something you should be able to do cant be done. WTF would it be "common knowledge" that you cant completly fill up a car? I have owned 40+ different cars and never heard that I couldnt fill one up all the way and I do read the owners manual from cover to cover.

I love knowledge and strive to learn as much as I can. Help along the way is appreciated, basically being called a dumb ass when there is no ground for it is not appreciated.
 
What evap tray? On a Gen 2 maybe, but not a Gen 1 which is what this thread is about.

Well my post was regaurding my 2nd gen, not a first gen like the OPs car.

Guess I wont fill it up any more. :( now that means every other day to fill up instead of every three. That sux.
 
Well, I have to admit "I" "HAVE" topped off my tank.
I dont usually do it, but if I'm at the beginning of a long trip I might cram a few extra gallons in there.

Knowing that fuel wont be sitting in the tank for long, and probably wont experience "heat expansion" and flood the evap system.

That is the main problem is expansion.
Fuel stored in underground tanks is a great deal cooler than it will be once pumped into a gas tank on a car.
When this fuel heats up, it expands.. and floods the evap system.

Like I said, "I've done it".. I dont make a habit of it.

Sorry if my post was harsh sounding, you know how us Texans are.

Try this... dont hold the nozzles handle at WFO (wide f*cking open)
pump slow, about half speed or less.
you will
1. get more fuel into the tank
2. not lose so much back into the stations vapor recovery system

(leaves the baby food spoon for you to use later with some budding noob that takes your place)

dont fret, you wont always be a n00b..

No offense taken, I was low on beer and pissed off. :D

Anyway, that is prolly why I have never had a problem. I dont fill it up and park it. I fill it up on the way home from work and then burn 2-3 gallons on the way home. So by the time the car sits in the heat the next day its about 5 gallons down from full.

And also in my idiodic defense I was only reading the few pages from 243 where it discusses fueling. Didnt know it mentioned it again. Guess I need to read it again. Normally I buy a car, read the manual and then sell the car 6-12 months latter. I have owned my Lincoln longer then I have ever owned a car before.
 
I fill on the lowest setting on the gas handle, you get more gas :)

After it clicks off I got again, let it click off, then go once more let it click off and am done...

thats about how i do it, theres alot of big air pockets that will trip the auto shutoff thingie early

I have stopped filling it. I get to 50 miles left and throw $40 in it. It stops before the pump does. But again, its when I go to/from work so I burn 2 gallons during the drive which may be why Ihave never had a problem. And if I had to vhange a filter I would rig up one from another car is thw OEM one is expensive. :D
