Driveshaft Balance

i noticed you all keep saying get a 93 ds. what is the diffrence in a 93 ds and a 95 ds?

The 1993 DS is only year of the 1 piece DS. Any and all years after use a 2 piece DS. If you look at 2 piece DS its a tube rubber glued inside another tube. Its kinda hard to see but look at the rear of shaft and you will see a groove. The only thing keeping them together is rubber.

hmm so after 93 is a sleeved ds? i was thinking the 2 peice one were a real 2 peice with a carrier bearing witch i thought was retarded since it has a irs but i will deffinatly look at that

For the untrained eye they would not even see that its a 2 piece DS. Thats why you have to be careful buying them.

See the gap in the stock shaft in the picture? That's the later "two-piece" driveshaft

Doug - Thanks for showing us the difference in your pics. I always learn
a few more little things about our cars each day.

I've had my share of breaking or bending and replacing driveshafts on my
4X4 on a few spirited off-road excursions. So I am familiar with 1 pc DS.

I understand the benefits of a single shaft but what was the
underlying reason as to why the Lincoln engineers decided to go with a
2 piece for all Marks made after '93?

To reduce NVH.

NVH - Apparently, it didn't help with the Vibration.

I'm not sure on the Noise and Harshness though. I have no comparison on the ride Q
between a '93 and a 2nd Gen.

I would guess it helps NVH at lower speeds under the typical US speed limits. As long as everything is in good stock condition the 2piece does not realy show much vibrations untill 80mph. Gears increase the drive shaft RPM so you see that vibration at lower speeds.

Most people won't notice vibrations until they have NO vibrations.

I replaced my '93 driveshaft when I installed 4.10s with a true MMX driveshaft back when they were available. The difference was night and day.

2-x what john posted we installed a dennys shaft on the pumpkin when we built it and was glad we did.

Difference between my 97 two piece sleeved steel driveshaft in my thunderbird was night and day when I replaced it with a 93 one piece aluminum mark viii driveshaft with new u-joints and a professional high speed balance.
