Dreaded Oil Thread...

I was curious about the two filter sizes being available. How do we know which filter to use?

One is for cars with the oil cooler (shorter filter, cheaper) the other is for cars without the oil cooler (longer filter, more expensive). They do NOT swap - I tried. The short filter does NOT seal properly on the non-cooler surface. I didn't do a side-by-side, so I don't know if it could be persuaded to work.

If you don't know whether or not you have the cooler, then look at the oil filter. Now, where the filter screws onto the motor, if there are two rubber tubes for coolant coming upward, then you have the cooler. If the filter just mounts to an adapter that goes right to the block, then no cooler.

Careful with the Fram filter. There are loads of horror stories about Fram filters rapidly deteriorating and mixing cardboard contaminants into your oil. I recommend spending the extra $4 or so on a Purolator or similar.

Thanx for the tip, I wasn't aware of that. I'll have them use a different filter next time.

Changed at dealer. Motorcraft 5W-20 w/ Motorcraft Filter.

My Gen1 is changed at the Lincoln Dealership. They say they use the same oil in all vehicles.

Motorcraft 5W-20 synthetic blend w/Motorcraft Filter.

Motorcraft 5W-30 synthetic blend w/Motorcraft Filter.

The difference may be geographical, where mine is SouthWest in desert heat, others in colder climates may have different weights of oil used at dealerships...?

Lincoln/Ford changed from 5W30 to 5W20 sometime in late '01, IIRC. There was a TSB on it.

That would probably be correct, the higher the 2nd number, the more resistant to thinning, iirc, smaller, the thinner it is out of the jug, although thicker oil obvisouly seals better, and generally coats better, it just depends on your region I would assume.

Edit: I stand corrected - it's 5W-20 synthetic blend (based on a few recepits from previous oil changes that I just reviewed). I had always remembered using 10W-40 in the 70's, or 10W-30... so I was surprised when they said they used 5W-20 (I remembered incorrectly and was mistaken on my previous post).

Ford's viewpoint
5W-20 oil is a thinner oil with lighter viscosity that creates less drag on the crankshaft, pistons and valvetrain. Additionally, the oil pump can pump thinner oil more easily, improving oil circulation. Machined internal engine parts are more precise than the parts of 20 years ago. Continued in next link below...
Oil additives are not recommended as noted in the owners manual.

Why 5W20 Oil?
Some customers are reluctant to follow Ford's recommendation to use 5W-20 oil in their engines based on the incorrect assumption that Ford and other Auto Manufacturers only recommend 5W-20 oil in order to increase fuel economy. Using 5W-20 oil can increase fuel economy by about 6/10ths of a percent compared to 5W-30 and more if you are currently using a higher viscosity oil. This equates to an additional savings of 125 million gallons per year when used in all applicable Ford vehicles. Since its introduction in the 2001 MY, 5W-20 oils have saved up to 640 million gallons of gasoline in the U.S. or an equivalent 5.6 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

You should have heard the outcry when Mobil1 first came out and their 1 year or 25K mile change interval!

Anyone tried this yet and would you even recommend it in both GEN LS'es ?

I have M1 5W-20 Full Synthetic in mine now but recently came across this.

I've used the same oil you're currently using and was happy with it. What you have posted I'm going to assume is a marketing ploy to catch the typical (uneducated) shoppers' minds. I believe joegr mentioned that 0w20 is a safe alternative to 5w20 or a better alternative. *Edit: He mentions this right in this thread.

Wouldn't making the switch from 5w to 0w affect fuel economy by itself? Or are its differences only experienced at startup (cold)? Reason being, perhaps they make those claims of better fuel economy under the assumption that the consumer is switching from a heavier weight oil.

Also, 2% increase in fuel economy as the product description suggests is something around .4 mpg assuming a combined 20mpg. I would change my driving style rather than changing from a proven oil to a relabeled marketing/sales trap oil. It will probably suffice and it might be the exact same oil with a different label. Just my two cents.

Changed at dealer.

Motorcraft 5W-20 w/ Motorcraft Filter.

Oh god, n00b status back then.

Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20 full synthetic w/ Motorcraft filter, DIY every time.

... What you have posted I'm going to assume is a marketing ploy ...

Makes sense, this would then also explain why it's in this week's flyers, listed as NEW and ON SALE. Grab your attention kind of thing.

What's new is that it is available in the five quart jug at Walmart. They also just recently starting carrying Mobil 1 0W40 in the five quart (needed for a different car).

Oil changes are getting salty anymore.

Motorcraft semi and a Furolator filter, couldn't find a motorcraft for the LS.

Isn't it always when you just finished buying something and then a week later, it's new, improved and on sale.

those guys ...

Ok, so from my understand of oil numbers, 0W20 is better than 5W20 because its viscosity changes less with temperature? If not, please correct me

It acts as a 0 weight in winter vs. a 5 weight.

My wife does my oil changes. You know I just can't understand how some of you guys let your car go 10 to 15, 000 miles before an oil change. Even if the oil manufacturer says you can how do you trust that. My personal opinion, I think its a bunch of b.s. to make people by less oil. I couldnt do it, I change my oil every 3000. It just good reassurance. I don't trust it one bit.

Yeah shes awesome she does all the easy stuff, I do all the hard stuff. Hey its her car she has to earn it right.

Mine doesn't do oil changes but she does take the trash out.
