Do you check the tranny fluid level hot or cold?

Also, is there any history of the dip stick reading inaccurately? My car's been sitting for a while and during the time the tranny has been leaking fluid. Now it's stopped but as I'm having shuddering issues at low rpm's I'm worried it's low transmission fluid. I checked the fluid hot last night and it read full. I thought you were supposed to check it when it was hot.

I'm taking it to a shop today to have a new OEM gasket put on the pan, but don't want to be burning the clutch up in the process.

Myco, what yr is your Mark? if its a Gen1, a lot of the guys put a pan from a 98 on the Gen1 tranny. its a little deeper. they are pretty cheap from Max or maybe someone has one for sale. dont forget to change the filter too.
 
it's a 97. have it under control. Filter was actually changed less than 1k miles ago. It's just leaking b/c I didn't use an OEM gasket. Shelling out money for mercon V again is a rub though.
 
Changing the gasket isn't going to stop the shudder. Once it starts, it only gets worse. You will eventually start hearing a whining sound coming from the TC if you aren't already. I have already been through all this and watched one break down to the point of it not even being able to upshift on it's own anymore. It's next step was not moving forward anymore but I got it out and replaced it with a 98 transmission before I ended up being stranded. This was a 94. Shudder in a 94 is the same for a 97 unless you have the updated version that came out late in 97. If you did, it would be very unlikely that you would be having shudder.
 
You are wasting your time and money. You had this shudder from long before you painted the car. Its time for a rebuild and new TC. Stop wasting your money and time on crap that aint gonna fix it.
 
I have no shudder. I don't know where you guys got this. The car is stumbling on idle and at wot which I have started a thread about but this is just a tranny gasket change. I did have shuddering when I bought the car and swapping the fluid when I got it fixed the problem. Right now I just wanted to make sure that I had enough tranny fluid in the transmission for the trip to the transmission shop. That's all.

edit: ohh I see where this came from. I used the wrong wording. It's not shuddering it's missing. Def. an engine issue after I drove it some more. I had just taken it around the block for the first time in 9 months and I was worried that the so much tranny fluid leaked that it was not being sucked into the transmission.

I have learned that the OEM re-usable gasket that comes with the tranny is the only one to use. Those crappy, flimsy, cheesy rubber gaskets that come with the new filters are absolute crap. If by some chance you mess your OEM gasket up somehow, get a new one. I'm still using the one that came on both my Marks. Plus, a drain plug in the pan is a good idea as well. I put a drain plug in my '96 and it makes fluid/filter changes soooo much easier + less messy:). I'm going to put one in the '97 next time I change the fluid/filter, which will probably be the end of this month.

i brought a clean 1 gallon jug to the parts dept at the Dealer, and got Motorcraft Mercon V for 12 bucks a gal. or 3 bucks a qt.
