Usually I would deem an oil pan gasket change as simple. However upon close inspection, and verification from two local shops it seems as though it's going to be a difficult job requiring either dropping the K member or lifting the engine slightly.

Does this seem correct?

Has anyone tackled this yet at home without a lift?

Any tips to provide?

I've got a 97 Base Mark VIII

dropping the K member is the preferred/easiest method for sure.

Do not fear dropping/lowering the Kmember, it's not as hard, nor as scary as it may seem.

It’s also a good opportunity for headers and a front sway bar, dropping the "K' is not that hard, just take a weekend to do it and have PB blast and a good breaker bar.

I've got to do this myself, soon.

I haven't looked yet, but doesn't seem too hard. Harbor Freight sells an engine support beam, to allow you to keep engine in place, while the K member is dropped away.

While you have the K member away, be a very good idea to also replace the oil filter adapter gasket and the oil pressure sensor that's in that housing - both items are cheap.

You don't even have rust to worry about like we do up here... spinning one of those nuts in the frame rail is grounds for killing yourself...

Thanks guys. Now I have to figure out if my balls will stay in tact and I will man up and do the job myself......or let them fall off and pay someone to do it. Decisions, decisions... ;)
