Cost per year.....

I saw this on another forum and thought it was kinda neat but alot of math.

What to do.....
1. How many years owned.

2. Total mileage you have put on the car since owned.

3. Service costs....Example - performance parts, new tires, brakes, parts from wrecks, ect..ect... and add the total up.

4.Oil changes (total miles since owned / by miles driven each oil change
* cost of each oil change) Example= 100,000 miles / by 3000 = 33 oil changes * 25.00 per oil change = $825.00 in oil, add this to the service costs.

4. Average MPG

5. Total gallons used.....(Total miles driven / by MPG) Example= 100,000 miles / 25mpg = 4000 gallons of gas

6. Average cost of fuel * total gallons used. (3.00* 4000 gallons = $12,000)

7. Divide total service costs by how many years youve owned it. ($8000 / 5 years = $1600.00 a year)

8. Do the same thing with the gas. ($12,000 in gas / 5 years = $2400.00 a year)

9. Add them up and you will get the average total cost you payed to drive that car each year.

Well I have been looking at getting a new DD and was really bored so I actually did the math out on my current DD. Anyone else rockin a 17 year old DD? Whats your mileage? Feel free to work yours out and post operating cost if your as bored at work as I am. Thought it was interesting

$29,157 in Premium fuel
4 new tires every 50,000 miles……6 counting 300,000 mile tire change
Avg. price of 4 new tires and cost to change….$700(generic brand)
$4200 in tires

Including misc service and maint. fee’s ie. Timing belt suspension parts…

Over $40,000 in operating costs over the last 17 years
$2350 a year to operate
$1715 of that in gas a year


Price of a 1993 Acura Legend GS Coupe Type 2 when new
$38,000 fully loaded

Price of a 1993 Acura Legend GS Coupe Type 2 now
$1500 in Fair condition

Over $78,000 invested in the car
Works out to about $4600 a year....not to bad of an investment

Ive got a 1995 Lincoln Mark 8
Bought it for 1900.00 7 years ago with 70,000 miles. 3rd owner.

Now 105,xxx miles

Rebuilt Transmission last year 2000.00
Swapped out the air ride to coils and struts 5 years ago 600.00
Plugs and wires 5 years ago 98.00
Water pump + T-stat 5 years ago 120.00
Full brake overhaul 5 years ago 500.00
2 new tires 1 1/2 years ago 78.00 each
Wrecked and rebuilt 1 year ago 300.00 in parts
Rechromed headlights 2 months ago 100.00
HID kit 2 months ago 60.00


25.00 per oil change 12 oil changes since owned = 300.00 in oil

26mpg roughly 450 miles per tank
18 gallon tank = 78 tanks of gas
1404 gallons of Premium @ roughly 3.00 a gallon since 2003= 4212.00 in fuel


Total = 8446.00 in 7 years

1206.57 dollars a year to drive

601.71 a year of that is gas

2.5 years, would probably sell for what I paid in 06.
10k miles
$1300 trans, free torque converter, $900 tires, $300 car PC, free brakes, free alternator.
5 oil changes at about $5 per change barely counts
$1500 gas at 20mpg

$1610/yr, or $2110/yr including insurance.
Over 50c per mile though.

Hard for me to do the 94 I had. Bought it in May of 2005 for $1574.00 tag, title and tax. 164,000 miles when I bought it.

One new set of tires in 07 for $400.00

98 Trans for $250.00 + $100.00 for the help on installing it.

3 oil changes at around $45 each

Three plug changes. One was 1 day before it burned.

One set of plug wires. $70.00

Water pump, free.

12 quarts of Mercon V to fill the 98 trans. $71.88 5 days before burning.

Alternator was around $250.00

164,000 to 183,000 miles is 19,000 miles worth of gas in 5 years total.

HID's $60.00, already had new housings in it.

That's pretty much it.

$1460.00 for insurance for 5 years.

3. Service costs....Example - Air filters, PCV Valve, Transmission flush with Mecron V, trans oil dipstick o ring, spark plugs, re tap head for 2 spark plugs, alternator, water pump, serp belt, still have upper and lower control arms I need to install $700 approx for everything

4.Oil changes my oil changes are free.

4. Average MPG well my old job was 60 iles a day I avg 26mpg my new job is 10 miles a day I avg 15mpg

Years owned: Almost 8, bought in Chicago.

Mileage I've put on: bought from original owner with 69k, now @ 149.5k, so ~ 80,500

And, no way in hell I want to know what I spent in gas. :shifty:
