Would a brillo pad work to clean the lens off before buffering or could 600 grit sand paper work also?

That is what I wasn't sure of.If 600 grit would be too rough.

For some reason the hardware stores here are not carrying anything higher than 600.At least one of them don't.

Would the Mothers kit do just as good?

I need to figure something out as well, if I rub my headlights with my hand the clear coat flakes off, leaving my hands with a nice sheen

I think i started w/s w/800ish and finished with 1600ish, maybe higher. Got it nice n dull looking, couple coats of plasticx and she was purdy again.

I used the Mothers kit and it worked pretty good. A bit pricey compared with buying sand paper and some plasticx but hey it worked and cleaned them up nice and clear.

Go to advance auto parts to get the finer sand paper, hardware stores didn't carry any when I was looking. I start with 1000, then 1500, and end with 2000. I have done 1000 grit only and buffed it with plasticX, came out great.

yeah you need sand paper from auto zone or advance auto, i wouldnt use 600 grit, the roughest i would use is 800, then 1500, 600 would work but it would take alot longer to get the 600 scratches out with 1500, 800 is rough enough.

Agreed. 600 is gonna work but, it's also going to cause you more work when buffing it out. Everyone has different methods and different tools to work with so those methods will vary.

I went to the hardware store up the road from me and they did have the finer grit paper. All the way to the 2000 grit.I got the 600 grit but will exchange it Monday just to have it.

I didn't notice that the Mothers kit comes with sand paper pads that start at 800 to 2000 until I got back.

Thanks for the info guys.Don't want to damage the lenses.

My suggestion would be to start with 1000 grit and work your way up. keep the headlight wet and sand away. You will start to see the yellow oxidation come off while you are sanding. They will be very hazy once you are done but don't worry, that is how it should look like. Just hit it with plasticX, and you will have yourself a "brand new" headlight. You really can't damage it unless you use a very rough sand paper.
