Alright im 22 years old and the LS has 100k. I got a bad cat converter, missfire, etc. I've put over $3k into keeping this baby running for the past two years and I just dont have to money to take care of this car anymore. Nor do I want to honestly. So, with that said i'm looking to buy a cobalt for a couple reasons
1: Its cheap, sporty, and hopefully reliable
2: It's American and my family has a legacy of buying american cars.
(also I can mod it a bit)

So I'm just seeing what some of you guys think about the cobalt. I don't think im gonna get the SS (even though it would be nice) Ill probably just get a coupe. How do you guys think it might be in terms of money, reliability, resale, longevity, and preventing me from dying if I get in a crash. Just looking for some opinions and some insight. I still love looking at my LS , but I cant afford to pay for her anymore. Thanks in advance guys.

id pass. and as far as resale, that doesnt seem to be something american cars are good for today (unless youre the buyer of course).

Yeah, those Cobalt SS's appear to be nice little cars. I like 'em, but each to their own.

Couldn't comment on their crash protection though - likely not nearly as good as a big car, like the LS. You'd have to get used to the FWD characteristics too.

I'm aware that the cobalt doesnt compare to the LS really in looks hp etc...but im talking just a good commuter car for everyday stuff. I feel like I've had my fun with the LS for a couple years now its time to be responsible for a couple years then get another cool car. How do you guys think that 4 banger will handle everyday driving? And whats the deal with "ecotech" . Is the engine american made or is it a jap engine like they threw into the chevy geos?

If you have any rough winters like we do here in MN, my friend got an 08 Cobalt this last summer and its horrible! They weigh next to nothing, almost as light as the 90's neons... which my other friend has.. in a stick... with bald tires...

Get the SS...ill say it again...GET THE SS

incase you got confused...

GET THE SS!!!!!!

If you are over 6ft tall you will never fit a Cobalr. If you want reliability and safe and economical, I'd say a Ford Escort or a Mazda.

If i had to buy another car (Not to replace my baby) I'd most likely get a Ford Escape.....that lil thing got my parents through this HUGE snow storm safe with no loss of traction when even tow trucks, buses, and explorers couldn't do it. Plus it's economical...up to 32mpg without the hybrid. They are pretty cheap with the Ford PLUS sales going on. And they are comfy with ALOT of passing power.

Just a suggestion

:q:q:q:q my quick reply went to a different thread, HAHA

it was "Btw, the escape is cheaper than a SS Cobalt"

Im pro GM as it gets but honestly the cobalt is a piece of crap if you look at the edmunds car rating on it has almost the lowest possible rating last year( Aveo had worst) however most of the things that it had bad ratings on can be fixed if being modded. also as stated before if you anywhere near 6 foot dont think about it i was looking at them last year and i barley fit in the front seat with it all the way back. im 6'2" 260. Now i HATE riceburners but for the money the mazda 3 seemed like the best bang for the buck just my opinion. Personally i said :q:q:q:q a new car and still cruise my 69 cad as my daily driver even at 8mpg but hell thats just my style :D

Good to know another 6+ footer agrees, and suprisingly the mazda suggestion as well. And yeah, can't beat the classics, especially less technical problems to deal with....

Cobalt SS might be expensive to insure... it's the kind of small, cheap, fast car that young males buy and then crash :D Not as bad as an Evo probably but anyway you may wanna check with your agent to see if it's a factor. just a thought

my cousin has one ...and they look ugly! and they really suck why don't u think about GETTING A HONDA CIVIC coupe those are really nice get one in black and tint it and your have a really nice looking car for price range 2006 SI civic could be around 20 grand and its fully loaded or if your in low range price an 06 Civic Ex 12 grand 47,000 miles but you sure can find them even cheaper for less miles

Wow you guys really dont care about sticking domestic. It's really that bad. I'm trying to buy a car around 10k the most and the coblt just looks like the closest thing I could get that's domestic and in my price range. I was thinking about a cavalier but probably cant get a great deal or a great warranty. I just want to make it clear that I' thinking about this from an economical standpoint not anything else....oh yeah and if I crash I dont want to die, but I might take my chances if I get 40mpg. (in response to petes86, I cant drive a truck of any nature....I will definitally roll that sh*t)

thats a sweet caddy you got

Did you get a second opinion on the repairs?

How much do you owe on the LS now?
How much are the repairs?

Then you want to spend $10K on a $6K (what it will be worth in a year.)

You either make end up making $250 payments for the next 4 years or you bite the bullet and get the car fixed right and drive the wheels off it.

Going from an LS down to a Cobalt is a big step down. Kind of like going from this to Tanya Harding.

In the small car division, Ford > GM imo. The new body style on the Focus isn't bad. Better than a Cobalt for sure. If I were in your shoes though I would go for a slightly older Fusion. Lower resale on those, and in this climate I am positive you can get a great deal on one. They look good and ride spectacular, and the 4cyl has some balls to it.

I'm picking up an 88 Chev. 4x4 in a couple weeks. 350, manual trans, and the body ain't in the greatest shape. Perfect for winter driving. 750 bucks.

The guy's got 2 if you want one :D
