Carbonfiber Steerign Wheel

whatever happened to real CF? Ive seen professional CF and its more of a cloth, and the glue gives it the shine.

Its not glue. Its a gel-coat.:Bang If you have seen "real" carbonfiber, you would have known that LJ.

Carbon fiber comes as a cloth. As far as the glue.. see below.

Sorry Rollin, it's not a "gelcoat".

The "glue" you guys refer to is called "resin". It's a 2 part mixture that you mix right before applying it. Sometimes 1:1, sometimes 2:1 and even 3:1 and up, depending on what the resin and hardener specs call for.

The Resin, once sanded down (as you have to do in the finishing stage), is not shiny at all. It is actually very dull.

What gives carbon fiber that luster and shine is the clear coat (yes, car paint clear coat) that you apply as the last step... unless you use crappy clear coat, then you gotta do some buffing.

Now, why do we need to apply clear coat? Well, aside from the shine it gives CF, it prevents the resin in the CF from yellowing.

The same "resin" you are referring to is also referred to as a "gel-coat".:)

Having spent somer time in the industry, I've never heard resin referred to as "gel-coat". Gel coat is what applied to parts before we layed fiberglass on top of it. It makes it easier to remove the actual CF part once you put it in the mold. Never have I used gel coat to overlay a part.

Here are some gel coats. See what they are used for:

(note the mold release specs)

Then again... I'm sure wikipedia knows more than I. After all, I'm still a n00b at this stuff.

Either way, it's a real carbon fiber overlay.

IMHO, carbon fiber is cheap and doen't do the car any justice... I'd pay not to have it. MHO

actually real carbon fiber is the opposite of cheap, it is a high strength low weight material. How that doesn't do a car justice i don't know. But if its just look you don't like (too tunerish) then it can be painted like any other material.

not to grill you or anything its just that you want to make the car light to increase speed, look up the Koenigsegg CCR its completely carbon fiber and was the fastest street legal car in the world until the Veyron was delivered
