well the carbon fiber does just not the rest of the steering wheel.

IT would be a pain in the ass.

Rollin's wheel looks to be a CF wrap job. Not a bad one, at that.

To wrap the whole steering wheel in CF is a pain in the gluteus maximus. Short of finding that exact weave, you'd have to do the whole wheel and cover the current overlay job.

Even with the same weave, it would look broken. You'd see lines between the old and the new cloth (the new cloth having gone where the leather is currently).

Of course, you could fill in the separation marks, but if you do that, you might as well just re-wrap the whole thing with new cloth.

It's a pretty involved process, though. I helped with a Jag steering wheel (which, incidentally looked very similar to this one) and it was no fun. Took an experienced CF guy three tries to get the cloth to line up right. Then again, he is sort of a perfectionist.

I now understand why a CF wrapped steering wheel is so expensive.

Personally, I would never want to wrap a whole steering wheel for my personal use. Once clear coat goes on it, it;s about as slick as a wood steering wheel. A little bit of moisture and you better grab it, lest it slip.

Sorry. Saw Carbon Fiber and spaced over the rest of the post. Never claimed to comprehend everything I read on a forum.

But if he re-wraps it with leather, it may come out great. Only reservation I have is working the new leather into the carbon/leather seams.

I would think if you wanted to re-wrap the leather you would have to take off the carbonfiber wraping, im just thinking out loud but it looks like the CF overlaps the leather. Could mistaken.
 
No. You cut away the leather where the fiber cloth goes on. Then, you add enough cloth layers to match the height of the remaining leather. At least, that's what I read in a pamphlet once. ;)

If there is indeed leather under that carbon cloth, then someone cut out some major steps in the cf job on that wheel. But I don't think so. It looks too good to have leather under it.

Carbon fiber cloth is about .3mm to 1mm, depending on the fiber count and weave. On average, 3K is about .3mm. 12K.. about 1mm. Then, you have another .3 to .5mm worth or resin on top of that. Since the height of the CF and the remaining leather seem to be very close to each other, I'm 99.9% sure there is no leather under the CF cloth.

Then your right it would be difficult to match the seams where they meet.

whatever happened to real CF? Ive seen professional CF and its more of a cloth, and the glue gives it the shine.
